Creative jukebox (6gb storage) or any other of the 6 - 20gb storage mp3 players around. Best value for money by a LONG stretch

I've just recently started having a gander around for an MP3 player, the new ipod by apple caught my eye, its about £300 atm and only mac compatible but there is already some software in the works to make it PC compatible. It's got 5gb of storage as i recall and looks well spinky. I was actually gonna look around for an mp3 player that took CF/microdrives as i have a camera with a 500mb microdrive in it. Seems the buggers only sell em with smartmedia cards except one, which isnt very highly rated.

The trick is to get a creative jukebox (6gb), pull out the 6gb IBM drive, and replace it with an IBM 20gb ;) Mate at uni did it to his, and it's a seriously attractive MP3 soloution

Hmm, it looks nice, certainly up on a lot of the features etc. Problem is size, looks about the size of a cd player to me, 5"x5". I was looking for one that would fit snugly in my pocket.

You could try one of the competitor products. I can never remember their names, but since creative made the hdd based player, several others copied, but making them much smaller (literally 1cm thicker than the hdd itself).

/me has a look

Like this one: http://www.archos.com/us/products/product_500096.html

The early ones got slated for bugs in the OS/UI, but apparantly the later ones are much better. Haven't really heard of anyone modding them up to 20gb tho

/edit: by 'later' I meant the firmware updates, but you knew that already ;)

I've got a mate who has the Intel player. Seems very very good value for what you pay for it.

Personally I think MP3 players are a waste of time at the moment. Most only store 64Mb, about 1 CD worth of music at a decent quality. Going back to your PC every time you want to change the tracks?! believe me, the novelty soon wears off. MiniDiscs are way better, cheaper and you can still record your MP3's onto them. Some now come with PC link up cable to transfer MP3's and you can also use them for data storage. MD media is far cheaper than flash memory so you can carry a few around with you and not be scared of losing them. Those juke box ones with the harddrive are good, but they are very very heavy.

But anyway, if you do get an MP3 player, make sure the firmware can be updated to suport the new and future formats. MP3pro is now out and most MP3 players won't suport it.

Nice. Your a MP3 player owner I then guess. Most MP3 owners react like that when thier beloved MP3 players get critisised. Well you can shove those monstrous ARCHOS and Creative Jukebox ugly piece's of crap up your ass thanks.
And have you actually held one of those Jukebox thingys? Do you realise just how large and heavy they are? And they don't have a remote, don't record (its nice to be able to pop around a mates and copy thier record thier CD's) and only suport vanilla MP3. Oh, and a pathetic 8 hours of playback. I want something that will fit in my pocket (with comfort) too. Until I see a recordable (from standard HiFi) 6gig+ MP3 player as small and light as my Sony MZ900 MD player + few disks i will be sticking to my MD's. Ta.
MP3 type music/file storage might well be the way forward, but the techology is too new to buy into now. I will probably buy one myself in a couple of years when they are way smaller and the file standards have settled.

8 hours of playback and the lack of a remote would kill me too.

Do you get a free wheelbarrow to transport it around too?

:p

I have a Md player, I want a mp3 player.

MD are fine, but I really cant be arsed to spend ages recording them. I also dont like comprimising the quality of tracks by using mdlp to get more onto one md.
