Where to begin

I bought Tribes a few weeks agon now, but it mostly sits on the side of my desk unused...
This is mainly because I tried out the game on the BW servers after I'd bought it and I found myself completely overwhelmed as to what exactly I should be doing.
Now I'm no stranger to Q2 or HL but things were too different for me to get to grips with, especially since is seemed that everyone else knew what to do and how to do it.
I quickly became disillusioned and haven't played since.

I know this sounds like a whine, but all I'm really after is a good site which can explain the tips as to how to play the game 'properly'. Once I've read what can be done, outside what the manual says, then I'll feel brave enough to give it another go.

So, any ideas people? Where can the best 'tips and tricks for Tribes' be found.

Indeed.

Planet-Tribes released the very first, fully comprehensive introduction to Tribes back in September 1998, and its been continually updated since. It is now recognised as the definitive guide to getting the best out of Tribes by many Tribers, and is the most frequently referenced page of any unofficial Tribes site.

Everything from jetpacking to sniping, the use of mines to being a commander is explained in easy to use and access sections.

And, as if that wasn't enough, we are about to release Strategy 101 - *the* guide to getting those objectives captured

For a true UK perspective on the whole thing, you need Tribesplayers.co.uk This site is the OFFICIAL UK/Ireland site (supported and in partnership with Dynamix themselves) and is due for release late this weekend.

There is a wealth of information out there, so here be the URL's :

www.tribesplayers.co.uk

Have fun - see ya on the servers!

ok, maybe ill get abuse form this but who cares.
i find the best way to learn a new program or game, is easily to play it ot fiddle, use and try things.
they cant hurt, and its a lot quicker than looking at the manual.
once thats done, you just consult manual for pleasure reading, and for finer details.
thats it

There are a hell of a lot of little things in Tribes though that you really should know first...

Things like favourites, the correct way to deploy turrets, snipering and mortaring are all in the manual and cause no end of annoyance when having to explain in the middle of a game...

Best way to learn is to get a friend to show you the ropes in a peer to peer game. I learnt off Mikeybear when I started and since then ive done the same for a couple of people. It saves a hell of a lot of reading

don't you need an empty server for that sort of thing though. Firstly so that you don't get killed by opponents in the game and secondly so you don't hack off you team mates by not joining in?

BTW I did try again on Tuesday.. but within 5 minutes or so of joining the BW servers closed down for some reason

I did manage to get the favourites sussed though

for some reason, I couldn't seem to buy the laser rifle, but suddenly it became active after selecting / deslecing light armour a few times. Once I had it.. I locked it into the the favourites and now it's mine forever ha ha ha ha!

Pity I'm no good at using it yet though.

No time to yesterday though...

Sure there are some great guides out there, but for basic practiceing the best way forward is to host your own server. (You don't need to be connected to the net for this.)

You can choose which map you want to play, and have a good look round it. Check out what the differernt packs do, and how the armour types vary. Set up some favorites then try deploying some defences.

Then you can change teams and try attacking they base you just left.

Its worth the effort tho!

Hosting offline is also a good way of practising driving the vehicles. Especially when you encounter enemy base defenses.
