Yo

Need to find somewhere to live around Basingstroke (not a typ0, as it will be the death of me I tell ya!).

Requirements are:

Easy access to Basingstroke via train (ie direct)
Less than 40 minute drive to Basingstroke
Direct train line into London
Not Aldershot (where I grew up in)
No scrotes
No massive council estates
Affordable either buying or renting (initially)
Some form of nightlife so I don't have to wander around the South of England to grab a beer.
Not too close to Wales or the South Coast (people go to the South Coast to quietly die, I am not there yet and people just don't go to Wales).

More than likely have missed something but you get my drift.

What about Basingstoke?

I keep hearing it is a shithole and from the amount of time I have spent driving thru it I tend to agree, it is a bit like Brackenhell (Bracknell). All concrete and nowt more.

Bit close to home :/

But, Winchester or Southampton. Basingstoke is 20mins away from Winchester, probably 35mins in the car to Soton.

Tis expensive here (Winchester), but has one of the highest ratios of pubs per square mile, so I understand. Southampton mebbe more your style, for city life with clubs and bars etc.

Personally, I don't particularly like Basingstoke. It's one of those "Shit, lets build a City" type projects. A'la Milton Keynes. But, has a fooking stonking cinema with full height seating luxury and a substantial shopping centre. Even a few clubs etc.

Shit, missed the South Coast exclusion requirement. Probably best to dismiss both of my suggestions. :)

Winchester is a lovely City, the pikey to real person ratio is like 1:5, quite outstanding when compared to some other places. A good night out can easily be had, lots of drunk students who just want to have a good time and not likely to get lary etc (Me, for instance). Southampton is a shit hole. End of.

Well, anywhere in the area that isn't Andover tbh. Avoid Andover like the plague.

I recommend Manchester. Its got an airport, lots of motorways, and lots of good music.

Go to Wales Deebs. Then I can stay at your place when I go mountain biking.:)

Sorry, nothing useful to add, I don't know anything about the area you are moving to.

Popley!! :)

I've lived on the outskirts of Basingstoke (now I live in holland). The new shopping center is pretty neat. Apart from that yeah it is rather abysmal.

First off, don't move to Basingstoke itself. I lived there for four years and still have the dark hole in my soul that it left there.

I knew folks who commuted there by train from Reading, Woking and Guildford, all of which have some good nightlife (relative to Basingrad anyway). I think Southampton is better than it was too. Personally, I like Winchester, but it is very expensive. Newbury might be another possibility, although I'm not sure how good the train service is...

However it has the rather large downside of being full of mancs.

My mum commutes to Baskingstoke from Woking most days...
Not that the nightlife is anything to speak about with admiration, but it's quite a nice place, depending on the area.

Romsey is a nice town, with very direct links to Salisbury or Southampton (the A36, basically). May be a little quiet if you plan to only drink very locally (like, walking distance) though. :)

Deebs,
If your going to leave the real world(tm) and move to some quiet sleepy part of S.England then you'll always struggle as most towns out there are similar to Basingshitter once you factor in wanting the affordable rent, london commutable, loads of bars.
I'd recommend forgetting the easy London commute and go to Southampton as long as it's not bad commuting to basingstoke (don't know how far they are apart). My sister lives there now and have to say I'd be interested myself! OCean village is fucking nobby with great views over the marina, Dockgate 24 is a fantastic bar to rival ANY w.London bar (and you know I'm an expert on those!) Oxford street in Soton has plenty of bars, enough to meet any requirement, godd restaurants too.
The other thing to note is that it's a uni town. Great for totty and as you have some folding in your sky rocket they'll swarm round instead of the penniless student lads drinking strongbow and wearing their ben shermans ;)
London is only 50mins away on the train BUT it ain't cheap to get there!!!!!

I say rent first too and see how it goes. As the IT market is improving now you may find you want to try and get back into town. In which case stuck out there is the last thing you'll need.

Hello fella!

Hmm, Southampton eh? Would have to see what it's like getting to Aldershot and back on a Sunday for when I get my kids as well. Gah, so much to sort out.

I think I am gonna go driving round next Saturday and see what catches my eye. Need to move soonish.

On a side note, fancy a beer next weekend?

I'm doing our bloody HQ move in Richmond 26-29th March BUT I've worked it so that we should have Saturday night free for a night out. Fancy coming over to Richmond? *Should* have a "good crowd"(tm) coming.

Southampton (Soton to those that are too Chav to say it in full) is a great place imo. I've only visited though so not sure what it's like long term. If I could, I'd live there - in Ocean village. Pulling students all weekend and taking them back t'shag pad! As soon as anyone says Ocean Village down there it's like a VIP pass - I'm sure it's Southampton's answer to Docklands! :)

I'll contact you offline about beer dude...
