Help please

I've set up a dedicated server on my secondry PC (1.1 dedicated server patch), all fire walls have been removed from network cards but none of the people i give the ip to can find it or connect to it. I can connect to it no problem from my other pc if i just add ip in add server.

Any one got any ideas?

Is it running on a shared Internet connection, or are you running it as a LAN server??

If it is on the shared interenet connectin, you need to give out the external IP of the router.

thanks for the reply mate.

Yes. its is on a shared interent connection, my main pc (the one connected directly to the cable box and the one i actually play the game on is what it goes through). I have just given them the ip of the pc the server is on.

Time for a silly question, where do i get the router ip address from. is it just a case of getting ipconfig from the main pc or is it somewhere else.

Help is very much appreciated

If the IP on the server starts 192.168. or 10. (or possibly 172.16-31) then it is using a private address range and is NOT visible to the Internet at large.
If this is the case you could experiment with port forwarding on the main machine. You'll need to forward 3 ports if you want both GameSpy and All-Seeing Eye to be able to see the server. Obviously one port is that which you set the game to actually run on, then you add two fixed number to this to get the GameSpy and ASE query ports. I don't have the exact numbers to hand.

I'd be very surprised if you have more than one public IP on a cable modem.

You can do it with some modems, but it is naughty.;)

Yes, the ip address does start with 192.168

Not sure what port forwarding is but if anyone has a like to somewhere that explains more about it i would be grateful

Do an IP config on your PC (the one with ICS) you should get two Ip address's. One will be in the range 192.168.0.*

the other is the IP address for the cable modem (the external IP).

Try conneting to this IP from your computer, assuming this works, give all your mates this IP, and you should be sorted :D

/edit: If you want the server to appear in gamespy and ASE, you will need to set that up, sorry, don't know that bit ;)

Big Bump

Hi guys - by way of proving I did try to find an answer I'm bumping this old thread which came up on my search :)

I am trying to get BF1942 working as a shared or coop game for me and my lad on my home network but having trouble. I'll try to get as much detail as I can here:

O/S is win 2k on both machines. I've tried originally with my machine as host (either dedicated server or just through the normal game setup) where my machine is the main one on the network and his is auto detecting settings.

Both machines are in the same workgroup.

I can ping his machine and vice versa.

No joy.

I tried with a set IP address on his machine in the same subnet etc - could still ping etc but no change.

I have tried disabling my firewall (I wasn't connected to the web) and anti virus software but still no joy.

I have also tried creating the coop game on his machine and connecting from mine but still no luck.

The message is 'could not connect to server' each time.

Can any of you offer suggestions please? I'd love to kick his butt, though I have a feeling his reactions etc will be better than mine which is why I chose coop to start with :D

Thanks.
