Whats the big deal about Scarface?

I bought Scarface on DVD after hearing about how its the best "gangsta" movie ever and stuff, and everyone seems to own it and rate it so highly. Is it just because of its hip hop links that everyone hypes it? Because I found it not actually that awesome. It was okay, but I think Godfather and Goodfellas are way better. Do I need to watch it again, have I missed something? I am a really big Al Pacino fan though, and he was good in the lead role. :)

I still think its the best "gangsta" movie ever. Goodfellas kind of loses its way near the end for me. But what are these "hip hop" links you refer to? There arent any.

Menace 2 society was good too. Hardly good acting, but gave an idea of how life is growing up in the LA areas of the "gangsta rap" era.

Scarface is a classic. Parts of it may seem cheesy (the synth music), but thats all intentional. He thinks hes a smooth operator, a clever guy, but in the end he doesn't know shit.

I'm not sure, just seems like every major hip hop dude mentions Scarface, and if you ever watch Cribs (not that I do, my friend told me...) they all seem to own Scarface and will spend about 10 minutes discussing how cool it is. Maybe I'll have to rewatch it, I just didn't think it was better than Goodfellas, although I am extremely fond of that movie. :) The last few scenes were a bit pointless though, seemed to drag on.

It is indeed very good, but not quite as amazing as time has made it out to be.

Scarface is one of my top films. It's slightly different in focus from The Godfather and Goodfellas, cos i guess it's bigger in scope than those two so is more condensed. Pacino gives the best performance ever, it has genuine depth and plot development and some enthralling moments. A bit of a crap summary of it really, but if you didn't like it then you should consult a neurologist.
