Would switching to Chrome be considered an upgrade to Firefox, a downgrade, or just an alternative?

Heard mixed things about Chrome - really not sure

but some aspects of Firefox really piss me off - the recent upgrade has buggered my config up big time

I had nothing but problems with them both when i upgraded to Windows 7.

Really REALLY pissed me off.

IE works fine. I'm sorry if i was no help Lamp my friend. But IE is greatness.

Been using Chrome since they added support for extensions (there was one extension I just couldn't live without). Having multiple processes for separate tabs is far faster if you like to load a bunch of tabs at the same time. The javascript engine is probably faster at the moment - though they always come out with new benchmarks from development versions of Firefox which comes close to Chrome.

If you really need loads of extensions then stay with Firefox, otherwise I'd recommend Chrome over Firefox.

Chrome is an alternative. It's no worse and no better than Firefox IMO.

AdBlock Plus is my absolute requirement.

Do you have to configure every page you visit, individually? I like to have 5 or 6 tabs open at the same time frequently opening a new google search page.

Chrome is far better for me. Just try it and make your own mind up.

How can you have 5+ tabs open at all times? Work?

I dont have enough things to look for/at.

Right this second I have 8 tabs open in Firefox. Adblock works on a page component level and a blocklist. I've tweaked it some more so it blocks out some of the new panels on Google that get on my nerves (Twitter feeds, right hand side adverts etc).

My Startup folder for Firefox opens 9 tabs. All my "usual sites" available in one go.

I often have 20+ tabs open, especially when I hit new sites like The Register. Firefox is very solid in that regard but not as fast as I would like.

How exactly is Chrome "full of adware"?

Switch between Firefox and IE. When one doesn't work, the other inevitably will. Firefox is generally my second choice though due to its loading of images on image intensive websites which really pisses me off. When a button appears, I want to know it'll stay there rather then jump around the page while the rest loads up. That's my main peeve with it.

I too, would like to know how chrome is 'full of adware' - Can we get a clear definition please?

As far as google mining your info goes - that will happen if you use chrome or not...

The difference between the data mining done on google.co.uk and Chrome is that Chrome also records your IP against searches.

Its a good browser and I have it on my work PC, alongside firefox but I hate advertising and anything related to it, data mining being one of the worst tools in the industry.

Can't edit, timer etc.

Google are a mega-corp who's entire income comes from advertising. They aren't going to be releasing a free browser (or an OS for that matter) if it does not benefit them or improve their ability to advertise junk you have no interest in.

You're talking about the fact that anything you type into the omnibar is sent to Google? Well how the hell else is the search suggest feature going to work?

Why would I want it to work?

Firefox does search suggest too y'know, complete with sending your search text to Google so it can receive suggested results. But ohwait, it's ok for them because Mozilla aren't teh evils!!!

Its easily disabled though, through about:config.

"Here be dragons!"

It's even easier to disable in Chrome. It's in the standard options screen.

I think you should just admit to being misinformed.

Not really no, it still sends info back to google... As I said, I use both, one for work and one for at home and occasional work use.

I am not really interested in what anyone else uses its up to them, its personal preference. Personally though, I prefer to be in a totally ad free environment when browsing at home.

I just tested it in Wireshark (a packet capturing and analysis software), if you turn off suggest and DNS prefetching, nothing gets sent anywhere.
