What's acceptable flaming?

Can someone care to answer this?

In your exalted "newbie's guide", you say you're "exceedingly good at flaming newbies".

Yet, when said "newbies" (hands up who thinks newbie & it's variants are horrendous insults?) flame back, it's unacceptable, and calls for banning are made.

Most of you people provoke said noobs to make a response. ("Honourable/good flaming"? See the first replies to the NSPCC topic.)

Yet, when they "provoke" you into responding to them (see Tim's & Pav's threads), it's totally unacceptable and users get banned? Are your beliefs being offended or something?

What do I have to do to be able to act like a wanker and get away with it, even be "one of the lads" here? Lurk for X weeks before joining with regulars in their flames against anyone different? (Christ, that almost sounds like a racist accusation)

Some people here are decent & logical people, from what I've seen, and these people get my respect.

But the number of hypocritical moron sheep is astounding.

Thanks,

Ad. (Not the same one you banned from iRC and flamed here for a few links, btw)

Another thread!

Look. It's simple. It's very, very simple.

We don't mind new people. New people are great. We'd be a very bored bunch of narrow-minded people in a tiny little group if we didn't like new people.

What we generally object to is the attitude that certain people have of waltzing in acting like Johnny Big-Potatoes.

Oh, fuck this. I've suddenly lost all enthusiasm for this.

Ban everyone, best solution, heh

I do agree though, the flaming of newbies has to stop, and vice versa, oldbies (gnnng) should get a little bit of respect as well

It's not always like this. BW sometimes goes through 'bad spots', it seems, and this week is one of them. The flaming of new people has got out of control, but more often than not it's because they're provoking it, not because of the reason that they're new.

aye.

we seem to go through periods where tons of annoying newbies come along. then it goes quick with a trickle of decent ones. then it repeats

Make your point, please.

If I'm in a pub I don't befriend everyone who walks through the door. Someone who wanders in, listens, buys me a drink (hint) makes intelligent, witty comments is welcome.

Someone who storms in shouting about a new pub he or she is involved in and then starts criticising the decor and the way we drink will not be welcome.

Do you see? Do you actually see? Or is metaphor just a bad idea?

Heh, the pub metaphor is always used and Summo is 100% right. you have to try to make an effort to fit in otherwise you'll find the barkeeper grabbing a bat whilst the regulars smash bottles menacingly.

It's not hard NOT to be flamed, just don't act like a total mong about stuff that should be self evident.

Hmm, this thread reminds me of A.D

I'd have nothing to rant about/feel high&mighty about if I didn't think the rules & etiquette were hypocritical. Flaming & provoking new people if they fuck up isn't good if the new people hitting back is a bannable offense. Lynch mobs aren't cool either.

And the general "fuck off newbie" attitude displayed by some

I've no doubt this can also be a good place, but first impressions & all...guess I just chose the wrong topic to see flamed. Which was, as you can guess, the charity one. :)

Because some of the newbies seem to have a distinct attitude problem, and start to insult us when we point them to the right forum.

The best way imo, is to read these forums for a week or two, get an idea of the people posting, and what sort of things get discussed here, who to avoid annoying etc. A weird way to go about it that may seem, but i promise you it will work. Then you can start with the odd post, thats probably the easiest way to settle in and then you'll find there won't be any flaming in your direction.

I been with these forums a while now, i don't really post often, so the regs probably don't really notice me much but i do regularly read the posts, especially those by the storytelling genius that is Damini. Theres plenty of good people around here, like Summo and TDC etc. You just gotta realise that places like this are bound to be a bit over protective because a lot of these people have been here a long time. If you don't jump in with both feet, i'm sure new guys can get along with the regs fine.

Maybe when you people see that pubs, towns or forums are public places and get away from the "pack" mentality and stop trying to defend what you think is yours alone, you will become more welcoming to new faces.

Just my opinion.

Maybe if you re-read this thread closer you'll make a valid point instead of one that's already been covered and dismissed :/

We are welcome to new faces.
We are not welcome to new faces who act like retards.

There are a few exceptions to the rule, but such is life.

You are a new face, yet you are not acting like a retard. People who bad-mouthed your thread are outnumbered by about 10:1 with people bad-mouthing them. I really don't see what you're complaining about, mate.

I never complained on the above post. I was offering some advice on how to stop the flame that is happening now and un-called for flames of the future.

The analogy of a pub is semi-misleading, a forum is defined by it's regulars, they make a forum what it is, regardless of what it's title or heading may be. A period of self imposed lurking is the best policy, that way potential new members can see if the board is the kind of place they want to stay, instead of jumping in all guns blazing demanding that things be different, if the major things aren't to a potential member's liking, then they should consider finding another forum that will, or starting their own with like-minded people.

I have no idea what the Charity thread is (I don't really read these forums any more), but from a quick scan the only noticeable newbie-started thread on the first page that got flamed was cpt-ginga's idiotic "help pay for me to change my name to that of a computer game character". Which, imo, was fully deserved.

Anyway, I think partly the reason "newbies" get abuse is because they are so bad at flaming. I mean, if you manage to come up with something even vaguely amusing/witty/original, that's fair enough, but honestly some of the drivel wouldn't pass muster on a playground. Not saying, of course, that all the "oldies" are regular Voltaires, but 1) mother jokes 2) all caps 'shouting' 3) badly spelt/constructed jibes and 4) (this is my pet hate I reckon) people who put "lol" at the end of their own comments, all just make me think "imbecile". Show me a newbie that doesn't do any of those four things, and I'll lend him my asbestos jumpsuit.

ps: giving the title "exalted" to anything of Kez's creation is far from accurate :)

pps: add to that list 5) idiots who try and wind people up, do an appallingly crap job, and then say something ludicrous like "hahaaAHAHAA it was all part of my plan, I only posted to get a reaction". It's about as convincing as... a not very convincing thing at all. And, again, is the almost exclusive reserve of the flaming newbie.
