First of all:

1. I can't get cable round my way yet as I live in a smallish village.
2. ISDN was an option but my ol' man seems to think I won't keep up with the payments. (!?!?!?)

So I'm stuck on a 56k for now, an I'm looking to buy a new modem. I have an Elsa 56k HCF modem card at presant and seems to be a pretty good modem. Although, Idid hear that a Dimond Supra 56e pro are quite good for gameing and they keep you ping below 200....It that true? I'm AOL (yeah, yeah I know) and that sometimes on a good day gives me a a ping below the 200 mark. But, that's on a good day. I would change over ISP's to BT but I think their shite due to being cut off every 2 hours. UK2 and Barry Dial I tryed and they were pretty good but, I kind of have a large phone bill to pay. hehehe.

Any suggestions?

I'd consider paying for a better ISP if I were you. I used to have an account with Demon, and then paid BT for free off-peak surfing. I was pinging about 120 on my 56k.:D

General view of the BW peeps is that the Diamond Supra 56e is the Don Dadda (though Bodhi will bleat about Hayes Accura, but he swears by ATi crads so, y'know...) ;)

HCF modems (winmodems) have a bad press due to eating up CPU cycles, but on modern processors this really is negligable. I read on a modem hardware review a little while ago that the CPU cycles used by winmodems is roughly equivalent to the amount used by Windows to display the rotating hourglass cursor. :)

I have an HCF modem and the biggest headache with me is random dropped connections. Pings are usually around the 150 mark.

You really need to change ISP. A new modem will not guarantee you pings of less than 200 at all but it will definitely help lower them. Your ISP is the first thing to change, not your modem.

I signed up with LineOne (which have now been taken over by Tiscali) for the BT SurfTime package . I find the service as good as it ever was, but I know some new Tiscali customers have a lot of complaints. They get disconnected every two hours, us LineOne immigrants do not. :)

I would always recommend Diamond Multimedia external modems.

I have Diamond 56ke (or maybe i) Pro, hardware PCI modem. Runs sweeeeet.

I get ~150 pings on NTLworld, and the modem will do V.92 if anyone ever implements it.
