I've always wondered what a newsgroup is but always been to scared to ask for fear of humiliation!

And since when did we have a group built into our forums?

Its basically like a forum, people just post messages, news, anything you want really. You just need a newsreader to read the things. Not overly exciting imo. :D

Oh, I heard people use it to download stuff, as an alternative to dc++ kazaa etc, how does that work? :D

You can attach binary files to posts but only of a certain size, so most files are split into a lot of different files. So it is (apparently) a good source to get films and stuff, but I havent tried.

The thing with newsgroups is that as new stuff is added it uses the space from old things. So on places like NTL and things, films and stuff are awkard to get as there is usually a lot of corruption. (PAR and PAR2 can help with this)

If you are serious about newsgroups and discussion then I suggest signing up to a better server. I pay £30 a year for mine and have never had any problems.

By the way. I can't even see that forum on the main page. Am I just blind?

I use easynews, basically they only host the files with binaries, nice web interface for zipping up groups of files, thumbnail views for images, global search to search every group etc.

£6 / 10 gig but well worth it, has a 3 week retention and you always get full speed from it.

There are loads of decent providers out there but the easynews web interface and search sold it for me.

Easynews, in my experience, is quite possibly the best newsgroup provider out there. Massive retention, fantastic speeds etc. etc. The problem is, it's really really expensive. http://news.astraweb.com <-- those guys do unlimited download (capped speed at 2mbit though) for 15 bucks a month. Max 4 threads, and I tend to get 120k/s on my 1mbit pipex dsl. The retention claims to be 15 days, it's realisticly about 9 or 10.

Whipped, what provider are you on?

p.s. Mobius if you're interested in talking about this more "in depth" than we can here, message me on quakenet - I'm on as nath.

Yeah I seen that one before nath, but to be honest I dont ever really use my limit in a month anyway. I also have been a part of their 'Grid.org' offer for ages, so have like 120gig of CPU time saved up that I can claim if I ever need it. I have never paid more than £6 a month, but I guess if your a heavy downloader you'd need more.

A friend of mine uses astra was trying to convert me, but I would miss the web interface too much. I mean you couldnt do things like this!

The web interface is another thing that makes easynews something really special. However, www.newzbin.com is very handy in that respect.

I was searching the board for anything to do with newsgroups. I wanted to find out how I can abuse the 4MB line I'm getting this week.

Anyway's I wasn't asking what a bloody newsgroup was. I wanted to know why this was here, anyone?

I am toying with the idea of sucking some newsgroups down here for readonly access.....no binaries tho.

Make it public and see how much people like it?
This sort of stuff makes me think that FH got haxxed and stuff :(

I'll shout at you when I get internet at home nath, cheers.
I used to use usenet quite a bit until people stopped posting 'good' stuff.
