What new OS?

I will probably be changing OS, cos the Win98 file limit of 2Gb is getting to be a pain. Thing is I knoww that XP has caused all sorts of probs with CS. Are they fixed? Does Win 2000 pro work with CS (or any or all other games for that matter)? Any other ideas?

Thanks

Win2k does work with cs

WinXP does work with cs

Done

:)

If you have an athlon and AGP and win2k you will need an update from the amd website to stop sound loops with freezes

If you have XP a compatibility update has been released recently which lists counterstrike as one of the fixes - so *should* work

I have CS with win2k on my desktop and thats fine, mind you i have CS with winXP on my laptop and thats fine :)

Thanks adz,

Do you like win2k? I really know nothing about it, but think it may be the way to go. Have you ever had any games that don't work with it?

I am upgrading my PC at the same time (probably) to a Athlon XP chip, so I would need the update from AMD? I guess it would be easy to find.

Thanks again

All the recent ones will work fine in Win2k.

Its the old skool games that wont work. Usually updates are released to help fix these.

As for the athlon XP, i think the update isn't needed, but you may as well check the site just in case :)

TBH I've not had much problem with Win 98, it has mostly been stable. It is getting it loaded thats the problem

Psy2k, I have never tried to push the limit of my file sizes, I've just been advised that 98 won't allow any over 2Gb. Is this complete crap? It is a number of people who have said it.

Win2K is defiantly the best, fastest and most reliable OS.

Whenever anything crashes on XP it asks if you want to send an error report to microsoft.
Message to everyone. Dont send it EVER.

The reason for this is that somewhere i found that it CAN send information about your PC (Software/Hardware etc) to Microsoft which if like me you had a "Backup" copy of XP isn't a good idea ;)

Anyway, Win2K is what im going back to after next format because XP has just too many bugs and errors appearing for me :D

I would advise Win2K without hesitation.

Most reliable yes, fastest no, win98 will give your games higher fps than win2k .

I wasn't aware of that - and touch wood I've never had problems running CS (W2k, Athlon T'bird 1.4GHz). I think the point's already been made pretty well, but I completely agree, W2k is wonderful. In almost a year of running it, it has only ever crashed once. The kind of buggy software hangs that would frequently occur in W98 with badly coded mods (/me points at WW2 Online) might fuck the program, but give it a 3 fingered salute and you're back with the OS, which remains rock solid (not that you have to resort to that very often either).
The only thing with 2k is it needs a bit of tweaking to get games flying - as it's designed as a business/network OS there are various network services in the OS backend which you ought to disable to get the most out of it (if I remember rightly there's a good guide at www.tweak3d.net).
