1) air control. atm player physics feels heavy and aircontrol is delayed/lagged

2) rox splash. splash damage is well weedy now, also u cant bounce ppl around properly

3) backpaks. ffs, even q2 players agree that backpacks are l33t. if its that hard to implement, leave the wep model to pick up but make sure u get all their ammo

4)fps. im sorry, but it is just SLOW. eg celery '450', tnt dropped to 20fps with NO ONE ELSE ON THE SERVER, on the so called 'fastest' setting. the system requirements are obscene even running with gfx turned down. my clanmate has p2-504, 128meg, v3-3000, sb-live and even he says its slow.

5) visibility. with all the hu000ge smoke trails gettin in da way, its hard enuff to make out ure teammies, never mind the fact that the skins arent all that clear

6) crosshair. im not playing Top Gun FFS! there was nowt wrong with the old x-hair form q1/2. being able to resize it is a definite plus thom, just its the wrong shape!

7) y change the RG from q2?

well, thats it for now, im sure ive forgotten siome stuff. dont get me wrong, q3a has sum nice features (eg ammo warning, player name, plasmagun/machinegun), its just theres a lot wrong with it to. spam q3feedback@idsoftware.com and hopefully they'll listen.

I found the fastest setting was fairly poor for me with max setting being as quick or even quicker. In the end I played around with some of the settings to give myself the best balance of speed and decent looks.

On an empty server my fps don't drop below mid 30s and thats with only a 333 and a v2.

Theres a 3rd party pak7.pk3 floating around somewhere which fixes a few of those facts. In particular smoke trails, crosshairs etc etc. I've got it and its very decent, i just cant remember where i nabbed it from though, someone will know.

Ways to improve Q3 test:

Take the wepons from Doom ][, but add the Q2 railgun, bfg and RL (sorry I prefer it, even to the QW one).

Strip some of the excess graphics, its too cluttered to be just 'right'

Make the sounds meatier (more bass please).

Do more cool things with that commentator voice thing (you know the one - says impressive and denied and stuff).

The movement doesn't feel right ether, but that's probably because I'm used to Q2.

err, theres probably other stuff I've forgotten, but I'm off to bed, I'll think about this later :p

Yup, sounds right american! Although I do like the 'Quad Damage' Sound.

You feel like you weigh 10ton when u are running... It gets better if you set FOV 120.

Initially I thought the MG was going to be a bad weapon, and after using it for a bit I was completely mistaken...

You have to remember.. It's a TEST! For all the people who were around when QTest came out, remember the maps we got? No weapons as I recall

But it was new technology, and things like Air movement where not implemented in the Test. ID are holding a lot back, only half the weapons are in this test, no team play mods etc.

QW was a bolt on when they realised Quake suxed big Latency on the Net.

Personally I am assuming the current weapon sounds are just placeholders and will be much better by the final game.

The question of heaviness is becuase they are introducing a class system into it wherby you move faster but can carry less and pick up less armour through to hardnut where you move slower but can take more hits due to extra armour.
I dunno if they are just using the middle class in q3test but the thing i have noticed is that the more stuff you pick up affects the hieght on jumps/rocket jumps.It doesnt affect your running speed even though it feels like it,I timed it and was surprised it didnt change.

The machinegun is fine as a starting weapon as it runs out of ammo fairly quickly to balance out its apparent strength as a default weapon.

I think the main problem is that Methos is contradicting himself in several ways, the biggie though is:

a) He is trying to make Q3A more accessible to the novice.

b) He is trying to make Q3A more like QW

Ingenious really.

Next time my friend, send it from yourself and not claiming to be the high-lord-poobah or the Quake community.......

Don't worry everyone ID ignored all the lame requests made to them wrt Quake2 and I'm sure they'll do the same with this one as well.

Oh yeah my 2 pennies..........

- Quad = Quad (ie 4x damage)
- No RL smoke trails
- New RG trail (otherwise OK) - and change that "poofy" vrooooosh noise and get something a bit more meaty in there (oo-er)
- They have deliberately reduced the splash damage from the Rox so that they do not end up dominating the game (as the RL does in QW) and I say leave it as it is.....
- Make it faster
- Make sure the DM maps are up to scratch (perhaps include some converted QW/Q2 maps as well as the new lot - playing QW maps on Q2 can be fun)

Now, you lot won't have seen me play Quake *at all* on the UK servers. I stopped playing Quake (nick was SalsaDip) many years ago when I found better things to do, however, I dutifully downloaded the Q3 test (it was after all hyped to heaven and back) and had a play around, on both single player and LAN.

The first thing that got me was 'My, this is really boring'...

I played the level with the space background, two floating platforms and jumppads for about 20 minutes before going elsewhere.. I felt completely uninvolved, and almost 'distant' (if that makes any sense!)

I suppose its like StarWars Phantom Menace. Everyone has been talking about it, and it cannot live up to the expectations. And I know it was only a demo and not (as every d/l site is so keen to point out) the finished product..

But I was expecting something *more*

This is perhaps going to be the last incarnation of Quake (I hope so). The graphics are prettier (but then, that is to be expected) but the gameplay to my mind left a lot to be desired.

I found the RL completely ineffectual, and slow moving. The grenades were dull (no satisfying 'thunk' like last time) and the standard machine gun-esque weapon pitiful in the extreme, although the bullet spurts are a nice touch.

After playing it, I seriously began to wonder whether Unreal Tournament will really flop as predicted, or whether Q3 will be relegated to the CD rack after a few weeks.

For my money, Quake (original) is still the best, and more importantly, most *FUN* 3D FPS around..

However, being an open minded sort of chap, I look forward to the full release.

I loved the Methos spouted &lt;I&gt;Bullshit&lt;/I&gt; haven't laughed soo long in ages when I read it.. I never played QW before Fusion 99 when some of the UK QW team gave me a copy and were kind enough to help me config it. Personally I think all this QW is better than Q2 crap and vica-versa ios complete &lt;B&gt;Bollocks&lt;/B&gt; I've played a LOT of Q2 and a little QW, they seen very similar to me so I think all the arguments are tripe. Methos is obviously saying make Q3A the next release of QW so he doesn't have to learn how to play a &lt;B&gt;DIFFERENT&lt;/B&gt; game.. What a sad git.

OK I'm not too chuffed with some bits of Q3A as yet, but it is a &lt;B&gt;Pre ALPHA&lt;/B&gt; release of a NEW game. I'm sure that the basics will be tweaked a lot and thinks like sounds etc will be user changeable in the .PK3 files anyway. I really with the bl33ters would either accept that it's gonna be different and require NEW skills in play or simply stick to the games that they do know and are too stubborn to accept are getting a bit long in the tooth. QW and Q2 will both survive pretty much as is as once a game gets a real following it never really loses it.

I'm quite hoping that Q3A the finished product is &lt;B&gt;Neither&lt;/B&gt; QW Q2 revisited, but something a bit different requiring a whole learning curve all of it's own. I make a total prat of myself with those bouncy pads, but they're well funny

I agree completely Rumpy. I want a different game now. If I want to play QW I play QW and if I want to play Q2 I play Q2. I think Q3 is different and with all the server-configurable stuff id were talking about I think it may be the most varied (and that's something I like) of he lot.

note: UBB code isn't off - you need to use [ b ] not &lt;b&gt;.

one of the major reasons for Q3T feeling slow and as if your wearing "heavy boots" is down to the maps. they're both quite large and open, most Q1 maps are small and compact and thus let ya run from area to area quicker, not because the player is faster, but because the map is smaller.

Tis correct assumption monsiur Hangtime

Q1 engine used a tiling effect so the ceiling is split into 64x64 tiles - rooms with sky are better than rooms with ceilings, I think that was it

I think Q2 was 256x256 allowing for more open maps (Edge Map - dunno (That cylinder one with rail under water))

As for movement, don't forget about the wall strafing

You can get around quicker.

Course if you get shot at, recommendations are to move away from the wall.

Not much help on 'The Longest Yard' (map name?) Then again it's not as if you can walk far with out being railed by some LPB from afar

As to open areas, in QLQWCL or GLQUAKE you can easily set the sky subdivision to speed up open areas greatly. from my l33t config:

gl_subdivide_size 512

not sure whats the default but a lot less
