What kind of computer do I need?

Well it finally hapened today, my rusty computer totally broke down. Instead of dragging all kinds of people here to try to fix it for me :)D) I decided it's time to buy a new one so I can actually see all the new SI stuff without lag :p

I"m posting this here because I'm expected in a permanent exp / rvr group so you know why I won't show up the next few days.'

So what computer parts do I need to buy? I will order from www.alternate.nl which is I think the cheapest company in holland. I don't want the best of the best, cos all I use the computer for is chatting and playing daoc :p Going to move to WoW after DAoC probably so it would be cool if the new comp would be suited for that aswell. Oh and it shouldn't be *too* expensive :D

I need everything except a new screen, mouse, keyboard, floppy and cd drive. Maybe it's time to buy a new windows version aswell, using 98 SE atm but it's not too good afaik :)

Thanks :)

get a decent mobo as they last awhile i hear epox is pretty damn good failing that a ABIT board
if you want your games playable get a geforce 4 TI. DONT get a mx they a pile of wank
if you want em to look stunnin get a radeon pro or a geforce FX both in the region of 250+ (british pounds)
get the best ram you possibly can 512 i would recommend as minimum daoc runs sweet on 768 though :)

gfx card
Sound advice from Vantros. MX = cheap half done in software run really slow, TI = fast. Get Gforce4Ti for certain, driver stability and compatability are most important so its not worth looking at other brands imo :/

processor
Get the fastest processor you can afford, Athlons tend to be cheaper for the speed.

motherboard
look for a fast frontside bus speed.

memory
512k, windowz has some issues with more memory as does most software, probably not worth getting more memory DAOC wont use it. Check the speed of the memory and compare with the motherboard no point having a fast motherboard and slow memory or vice versa.

power supply
Get at least a 300W pref 400W power supply, the GF will kill others quick ;)

casing
Transparent with a blue neon light inside :D

drives
80GB+ HD

sound card
creative sound blaster something or a cheap clone is probably as good. Sometimes these are built into motherboard.

network card
ethernet card or whatever your network needs

O/S
WinXP

your old CD drive, floppy, mouse, keyboard, monitor will do fine

i would get a 2000xp and a gb of fast DDR lram

also get a ti4200 geforce 4 as the price is coming down coz of the new fx cards but its still a top notch card

Here is my suggestion

Pentium 4 Motherboard: ABIT IS7-E (i865PE)

Reason: The ABIT IS7-E includes all the basic functions you can expect, including support for DDR266/333/400 and support for up to an 800 MHz front-side bus. It also features Parallel and Serial ATA support (no RAID), 8xUSB 2.0 ports, integrated 10/100 LAN, and 6-channel audio. It also offers a ton of upgrade options later on. Supports Hyper-Threading.

Comes with no onboard Firewire or Raid, so check if you need them VF

Processor: P4-2.4CGHz/800 Sock 478 Northwood
Cannot really go wrong there, you get the latest P4 batch of processors, and Hyper-Threading can give up to a 10% boost in overall performance (depending on the application/game)

Memory: 2 x 256-MB DDR400 DIMM (CAS 2, setting preferably)

Video Card: Sapphire Radeon 9600 Atlantis Pro

The Sapphire Radeon 9600 Pro doesn't move away from the base ATI specifications, and ships at a 400 MHz core speed and 300 MHz (600 MHz DDR) memory clock speed. The features list is definitely high-end, as this is an AGP 8X card that is fully Direct X 9 complaint, and also offers Radeon 9800-like improvements such as enhanced HyperZ III+ and SmoothVision 2.1 technologies

Hope this helps, it should not set you back too much and all these components will be more then good enough for WoW and other coming mmorps.

Cheers

Ah god I've been searching for you VF, shame about your comp. indeed.
We'd still like you to join our group, any estimated time on when you get the new parts?
If we don't get a replacement for you we'll go on without you and you can join us when you get things sorted, no probs.
I'll be PM:ing you with the adress to our groups forum, hope you can come by and keep updated.

Make sure you know what to order and all of the parts go together. Cos of some recent exp with that company i would really not recommend them....bad service, takes weeks before they fix something, they lack the ability to tune a pc with the right items, in other words....screw Alternate!!!

If you are getting a GeForce Ti 4200 then dont get it from a Inno3d maker. Heard they make poor fans and I have this permanent GFX bug which GOA cant fix as its due to the card...

Moo had the same problem i think and he had the same card so if you plan to get a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 then get it as a Asus maker or something.

ive just ordered a abit IS7 m/board with 800mhz fsb, a p4 2.4 800mhz, and 512mb 3100 ddr ram. To compliment my geforce 4 ti4600 128mb, somin tells me my machine is gonna be super fast. Especially as the board supports the new hyper threading technology etc. WOOO

Better then my old duron 1.3 anyday ;)
