What is in it for Mod Makers?

Just what is in it for amateur Mod Makers?

They don't get any money unless it goes retail, which it hardly ever does.

Do they do it for fun? When I last experimented with the JK2 tools, It was an absolute nightmare?

OK, I know gaming wouldn't be the same without them.

But just what do these people get out of doing this.

Note: No offence to those who really enjoy making mods.

They do it partly for fun but also to develop their own skills, this in turn means they might be able to get a job in the industry at a later date.

Is that just PC for people who are vertically challenged and why would they be enthusiastic about railways?

It's a hobby.

We all need hobbies.

Some have sheep, some have badgers.

Some even have real lives!!!11

The above post is why online gaming will never be very popular, sorry but its not compared to other enterainment, because its still seen as geeky even though its just like watching a film or something, i guess you have an iq of what? below 50?

Furthermore mod makers are usually artists its just a shame idiotic people think there better than them because they have a "life" or rather a job, wife and kids, wow isnt that amazing. Besides this is a stereotype by the no brain people out there, many mod makers do have girlfriends! wow! like anyone SHOULD care. People making models, textures and maps are highly talented people with skills just because they enjoy this doesnt mean there less of a person than someone who what exactly? this whole has a life statement is just another term for doing something just as meaningfull or meaningless.

Asking what mod makers get out of it shows what money driven people are about, its a hobby, its a good hobby, its a life, im sure the dizzy heights of other peoples great lifes are to be amazed at, ie. People who say "i have a life" what is it that you do that is so great? dont answer that, i dont care. I cant see a counterpoint to this post so i wont come back, change your views you sad people, let people get on with it

I used to make levels many moons ago before I turned to the darkside and started making websites. The main driving force behind doing levels was the fun of doing them. Back then it was a relatively new thing and I found it amazing that with a little effort I could build this little world to walk around in. I don't think I would ever say it was hard work, I did it as a hobby and as such I did it when I had time.

When I released my first level the overwhelming good response it got helped motivate me to continue. I gained satisfaction from knowing other people were getting enjoyment out of something I created.

I guess another factor pushing me to do them was the hope that one day I might actually get a job doing them for real, at a game company. As with all artistic jobs, you need a portfolio to show people your skills, exam grades dont mean squat. Creating levels for free was the only way you could create that portfolio to begin with and at the time the community were the judge and jury on what was good or not. If the community deemed something worthy it would become popular and thus catch the attention of the games companies, if not then it would be lost forever.

I released six deathmatch levels in total (trdm01-06 for q2 if anyones interested) and participated in a couple of mod groups, one of which finally released a fun mod called Rob The Strogg. The mod never made it big, it was too late in the day for Q2 really, but I felt a real sense of achievement over completing it. The levels however managed to catch the eye of iD software and they asked to bundle them on a Q2 deathmatch expansion pack, and they actually paid me royalties.

I no longer make maps, I found web design as an outlet for my creative needs, but I look back fondly on when I used to be a part of the mod community. It was fun and exciting and I'm sure it taught me valuable lessons, none of which I can remember.

Think I've gone on a bit too much there, time to shuttup.

Any insight and well-reasoned points you may have made were completely invalidated by this statement. Only a complete retard says things like "post whatever you like because I won't be coming back!". Naturally they always do of course, because they love the sound of their own voice and enjoy hearing people talk about them.

In fact, you're probably knocking one off right now aren't you? :(

I think the same can be said for Linux. Whats the point in spending years making a program for no money. Most people can go on as a hobby though. Also putting on your CV you created the Apache Web Server would look good.
