What will the Royal Mail do with it?

This is looking at parcels only.

actually no, they give you a few days to go and collect it, cant remember how long, then they send it back to the person who sent it.

They hold it for a certain length of time, depending on which method of posting used, and then return to sender if it hasn't been collected.

They return to sender much quicker than they used to as well :( Slainyou is a postie and he was telling me last week that they used to hang on to stuff for at least 7 days but if a return to sender address is available it now goes back after 3 days uncollected. I am sure he also said that those without a return to sender are incinerated at the descrection of local managment after 14 days uncollected :( Never send anything without a return address or it may well never be seen again.

Your only chance is to phone up wherever the package gets sent back to - sorting office - and ask them to send it to your local post office - but only do this after 4/5 days so it gives you another 7 days to pick it up from the point it gets to your post office (I think - not 100% sure but 95% or so!) other than that you are screwed - I hate royal mail for stuff like that - crap service tbh.

They'll try to deliver it for 3 days.
After that time, they'll realise you're not in.
They'll open the parcel and keep whats inside.
Then they'll break into your house, and shit on your kitchen floor

If you get along well with your postie ask them to give it to a neighbour or leave it in your shed ect? Or ask them if they can make a note on it asking the sorting office to keep it till your back. Of course if you did not give them a Christmas tip they will prolly say no :)

Other choice would be ask a realtive to house sit and sign for it.
