OK so Im thinking of taking the plunge and buying a DVD player -- anyone got any good suggestions of which one -- I am looking at (reasonably) cheap and ones that are not hardwired to region -- ie so I can play DVDs from America etc ??

I suggest getting a DVD-Rom to start with - it's cheaper and your be able to use all the DVD-Rom software that is coming. I use the Creative Labs Encore Kit with the Dxr2 kit. When the picture is fed to the TV it's brillant and the drive can be made region free. I suggest signing up for the DVDUK mailing list at www.onelist.com
People there know alot more about the whole thing than me.
Also check out a few sites such as: www.dvdfocus.co.uk www.ahawkins.clara.net

E-mail me if you want more info

Thanks for that -- sorry I meant DVD Rom - I
just tend to forget that there are odd people
out there who would buy just a player rather
than integrate it to their PC

PS the symbol at the top was meant to be a smile not a wink but it doesn't seem to want to let me edit that

I agree with rasczac. I have three players knocking about at the moment (not all mine btw) one's a portable Panasonic L50, one's a Pioneer DV05 and the other is a Creative Encore Dxr2 (there's a newer version of that available).

The Encore DVD-ROM provides a great picture when hooked up to a tv and it's not really worth spending any extra on a standalone player unless you get really hooked - there's just not enough difference in picture quality to justify the money. Also there was a program called 'Remote Selector' to alter the regions as many times as you like for the Encore Dxr2 (not sure if it would work for the later version though)

Enjoy - but you may become addicted ; )

Cheers for that

does anyone therefore know if the new Creative is hardwired to region or do I need to find this older one ?

The new creative DVD ROM and MPEG Card aren't regionally code, but the software is.

However the current version of Remote Selector allows you set the region no-probs.
(I even registered my copy
