Well, 2K beats the pants off 95, 98 and ME (Microsoft quote it as 50 times more stable)

If you want super-stable, linux is an option. I think my laptop has been on for 4 months now.:D

I got Windows 98 SE running super-stable, my "router" PC would regularly be on for 20+ days at a time before some software upgrade needed a reboot, it very rarely crashed.

My main PC runs Windows 98 SE and seems to take all the sh*t I throw at it, constant hardware upgrades and such, never had to re-install yet (since circa 1991).

'tis true, my main PC started out as a 386DX running Windows 3.1, I upgraded to Windows 95B and then Windows 98 SE, and I've had eight motherboard upgrades and five main HDD upgrades since, all without a single re-installation (yet, knocks wood).

My bloated registry occupies half the disk, but it it is stable :)

did you ever try that hac*cough* patch that would allow you to have a registry larger than your ram [or something like that heh]

my old work workstation had that :/ p200/64megs 80meg registry just booted: 98megs in use, 80megs paged out

sucks.

I think we're all agreed that Camaz' experience with Win98 is a bit special and shouldn't be used as a general recommendation. ;)

If you're looking at Windows versions and the brief is strictly this...
the most Stable Operating System... I dont want Fancy options
Then Windows 2000 is for you. I personally prefer XP because it's full of 'fancy options' but for you... Windows 2000.

Here's a voucher...

XP's options are a bit irritating to start with, but I'm getting to know it and love it, awwwww

Well i'm backing up some of my Software off my Harddrive by throwin em onto my other Networked Computer (Dont have many CD's left), then im gonna Format and throw Win2000 on.

BTW whats your Router Comp Spec Cama?

You say you leave it on 20days, is this safe? does it not overheat or do you have some big chunky fans to keep it super cool?

SuperGray: Running computers for ;long periods is not at all dangerous. My desktop is a p3 800, on a via m/b:)Puke: ), with nothing spangly inside, and it's been on almost 24/7 since december. I leave it switched off overnight once every few weeks or so, but besides that, it's allways on. Lately i was having some crashing problems after being a bit lazy with the modules when kernel recompiling:)(), however before that i was generally getting uptimes of 2weeks+.

Currently got 3days 14hours uptime, which was when i compiled and installed the modules properly, however i'm gonna ahve to recompile again, so no big uptimes for a while yet :(

Just installed Windows 2000 with NO problems what so ever, apart from my Network Card, but i think the Floppy Disk with the Driver on is somewhat corrupt :/

Also!! guess what :D i can go onto 1024*768 Resolution with NO Wavy Screen :D

I get far less hardware problems now with my PCs left on all the time, however, saying that, recently I suffered a severe motherboard failure in the main PC, had to swap out to motherboard number eight, working fine now and the suspend mode works better on this one :)

The Windows 98SE "router" PC used to be a P3/733 and Asus P3V4X combo, standard Intel fan/heatsink, one extra fan in the case, nothing special, ran 24/7 and the only reason I ever had to reboot was to install a software upgrade, normally the firewall, AV or OS. The screwy firewall would often put the CPU at near 100% for most of the time too, and ICS prevents Windows from going into suspend mode, so it was running top speed all the time.

I think my record was nearly 40 days, but laughably a small software utility that keeps track of uptime blew up and caused a reboot. I also believe there is a bug in Windows 9x and NT that causes problems over 46 days but I've never hit that yet.

Actually now my "router" PC has been retired, the new 24/7 router is a classic Slot A Athlon 750Mhz running a 7 year old 130MB Seagate drive with a Linux router/firewall, if anything the Linux is way way way more stable.

TBH I can't really judge as I've never used 2000 or XP for any long period, I find 98SE too stable to consider upgrading permanently.

that's almost indecently overpowered tho cama, cpuwise that is.
mine is a p166/64. before that it was a p100/32.
both my firewall and server have a current uptime of 10 days. that means I got my new desk 10 days ago hehe :) before that my server had a 26 day uptime and my fw had something like 90 days [I boot it every now and then hehe]

Assuming you mean the Athlon 750Mhz, true, but its running my ADSL frog and was my lowest powered CPU/motherboard with a reliable USB. The 750Mhz has prooved itself as reliable from way back, in fact I also have a "spare" 700Mhz Slot A to replace it if it did go bang :)

I have an elderly BX6v2 running a Slot One Celeron 433 downstairs which I think has USB, that would be ideal but its the kiddies machine and I am loath to replace it as it runs like a dream.

What you get for a makeshift PC. All parts stolen from housemates who no longer need them. Only thing of the original machine is my hard drive... a whole staggering 6 gigs monster. Other than that everything internal is scavenged :(

Ah well.

/me weeps.

I have a car though! AND it can move!

My Win2k Dell box is used for about 14 hours a day (heavy web development) and it often stays up for a couple of months at a time.

Saying that I had to reformat for the first time the other week - a .net framework patch FUBARed IIS good and proper.

Aye my comp is runnin pretty stable, but seems slow when loading up to the Operating System

and another tiny prob is, i have installed Norton Internet Security 2000, and ever since i have installed it, the comp will reset on its own when i browse the barrysworld forums (OK who is tryin to keep me away :D) so i have had to close that now and am Firewall'less lol

Also, anyone know how to change the clock from 24hour to 12 hour?
