What do you think my job is worth?

Looking for a bit of advice as lots of you seem to know about working in IT and such.
Basically i think im underpaid for the work i have to do and am looking for some opionions on what you think would be an average wage.

I currently:
Have to admin about 10 servers. Windows and Linux. File, print, exchange, proxy, web etc.
Software support for around 100 desktops. PCs and Macs. Pretty much all software you can name.
Hardware support for same desktops.
Ive been given(not asked to) a huge software package to customise using some bespoke programing language. No training just a crapy 50 page manual. There is a lot more to this but thats basically it.

The company is not really a nice company to work for, been their for 3 years and no chance of any training.

So any one know what the going rate for something like this is? Ill post my current wage later to see if it compares.

Thanks

PS Im sort of regular here, just using a new account as i know my boss reads this forum sometimes :/

You've forgotten the most important bit, whereabouts you work. An IT wage in London is not the same as an IT wage in Newcastle (taking two examples)

In a completely unrelated note, I went to my job centre the other day as I need to get a job.

I reeled off all my GCSE's, A-Levels, diplomas, awards I'd got, work experience and topped it off with a 2.1 degree.

They gave me...

An ASDA application. That was about the stage I felt like weeping.

Looking around Canterbury, jobs like that seem to be between £18,000 and £26,000 depending on experience and the amount of people working below you but bear in mind I'm not an expert so I'm just seeing jobs that demand networking and IT support, and they may vary wildly.

There is apparently a website where you can put in a bunch of details about your job, and then see what other people doing similar jobs are paid and get in the way of benefits etc. I heard the inventer of it being interviewed on 5live, but no amount of searching has enabled me to find the damn thing.

If anyone does find it, please linkage here thankyou...

I would have thought Asda is a perfect place for someone with a degree in comedy :)

So when someone complains to you that their tin of beans was faulty, you can act like you actually give a fuck!

Um... £18 - £20k?

Is that all? For a job with that amount of responsibility?

Okay, lets say £22k, taking into account Linux and Exchange.

I dunno. Pfft.

But it does depend on how much responsibility you honestly do have on the servers. Are you 'The Man' or do you assist him?

We have a monkey on the server team at work who changes the backup tapes and opens up DHCP Manager when we want to look at scopes. His CV could probably read like yours, but left alone in the server room I dare say it'd only be a matter of time before he wedges an egg sandwich in the RAID array.

I honestly caught him once standing under the air conditioning hoiking his shirt over his sweaty belly. *shudder*

He earns about £13k now, I reckon and that's generous.

Anyway servers are so passe. Cisco IOS, routing, switches and OpenView are where the cool kids play.

Well, im not technically 'The Man' as there is someone above me.
But i actually do it all. Exchange and proxy were allready set up when i started but i could put them back together blindfolded now.
Im the only one that knows anything about Linux and have total responsibility for our web and file servers(3 at the mo). And if i can get my way the proxy and email server will be going that way soon as well.

I would love to do some Cisco training but theres no way i could afford to pay for myself and theres no chance whatsoever that the company would pay for it. Im sort of stuck on that front :/

Oh and standing in front of air conditioners is a really bad idea. You get nice and cool for a bit but as soon as you step away everything feels way too warm.

Edit: Its not just the servers. It was more the software customisation thing. This is a massive amount of work(no one asked me to do it, just threw the manual at me) as it will probably mean rewriting half of it. And I know that no matter how well i do it there will be no reward at the end.

Okay, I'll give you £22k edging towards a ceiling of £26k over four years if you're really good.

Of course, I'm not your boss nor have any ability to give you such a job, so I'd suggest you might want to start looking around for something else.

Do it, The Man! ;)

edit: Oh, and rebuilding Exchange servers is a bloody arse. :(

Ermm, thanks i think...

I was actually thinking of asking for a pay rise. But i can see what will happen if i walk in tomorow and ask for another 10k and an extra 4 weeks holiday per year.
But its worth a try I suppose.

olde, I think you should be looking at moving on to a company that gives you a little more respect. You sound like you have quite a lot of responsibility. You have skills mate, and skills cost money.

Then if they don't give you a payrise, start looking for a new job and leave.

Be reasonably sure of another job before you start making demands. Nothing like saying "right, I'm handing in my notice" to get their attention.

IT support isn't very well paid anymore, as the market is awash with them. Infact, it's the lowest paid of IT disciplines (according to computing weekly months back).

I'm guessing that you would be paid somewhere between 18-21k (21k at the verrrry most) judging by the info you've supplied. If you think you're worth more, it's time to move on. IT support is dead end, particularly if it's just making sure things tick over. That's why i gave up the idea of pursuing it and became a developer instead.
