Well, I guess it's time to install an Anti-Virus program. :)

What program would you guys recommend? Norton Anti-Virus 2003, PC Cillin 2003 or maybe something else? Just looking for something simple, easy-to-use program.

I use McAfee personally.

(That could perhaps be because my Uni has a site license for it... :))

I used Norton AV back in the days of DOS, it was a good program but for some reason I switched to McAfee. I've also used F-Prot and AVG on other machines since most non-free AV suites require a subscription to keep the updates going.

Eventually it the one overriding factor became the ability to update the signature database easily and McAfee caused me no end of problems so I switched back to Norton about 3 years ago.

Norton was very good, I upgraded to NAV 2003 when I upgraded to XP last year, in fact I got the "Internet Security" which includes a Firewall, Anti-Spam, Anti-Popup and Parental Control, all of them are excellent.

My AV updates automatically, it never requires a reboot.

Norton AV gets my vote, or if you are a cheapskate then get AVG.

P.S. If you get Norton, get the download version from the US website and pay in dollars, much cheaper.

NAV seems to miss a number of virii - even when the VDF is fully up to date.

Heard a number of intances when NAV missed virii which AVG picked up

avg is free it works, you can run scheduled scans even scheduled updates. It doesnt cause problems with XP Pro, what more could you ask for?

Opposite way round for me. NAV picked up stuff AVG missed repeatedly. I vote Norton!

one thing I "may" do is install 2 AV - then it might almost guarantee all virii are picked up (only have one constantly monitoring thos).

Just a thot :m00:

Wouldnt say its the best but I use AVG. Small program, free, hardly uses any processing power and something else I cant think of.

If one is only active then how would that give you double protection? Installing two would be very very pointless. The blast virus got past most our customers AV apps simply because the virus circulated very quickly.

Keep upto date (Check for new updates everyday), install some sort of firewall.

Bad idea to install 2 virus checkers. I think you will hit some problems doing that as many are incompatible.

AVG gets my vote.

for the pure and simple fact that the free version installed on Windows 2000 Server :D all other ones refused to install and said to buy the server version.
(the only real difference being that the server version scanned files as they were accessed through shares, which i never needed)

I would take Norton over Mcafee any day, primarily because any time i've worked with Mcafee it's either been a resource hog on the machine, or caused BSOD's when shutting down. Nortons never given problems when installed and running.
