PRESS STATEMENT
13/03/2002
By N.M.Shamuyarira Secretary for Information and Publicity –Zanu PF
The results of the Zimbabwean presidential election that have just been announced are a personal triumph and a historic victory for the President and First Secretary of Zanu PF, Comrade Robert Gabriel Mugabe, and for the nation of Zimbabwe as a whole.
It is a significant event in the international calendar of the region, the continent, and the world.
He has been attacked personally by the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, and some European Union leaders, and demonized and vilified by the international press, especially in Fleet Street and the BBC.
A massive and negative propaganda campaign was launched by the former colonizers in Britain directed against our ruling party and its leader.
They wanted to change the government by any means, fair or foul, and impose their own puppet.
That campaign flopped dismally because it was against the basic interests of the people of Zimbabwe, it was both unfounded and ill-founded.
It was based on a pack of lies pedaled round the globe by Tony Blair and the mandarins of Fleet Street, without any consultation with the ruling party and its leaders.
Contrary to the British-led propaganda, the people of Zimbabwe have demonstrated their support for President Mugabe and for the party, Zanu PF.
This is the party that fought for and gained independence for Zimbabwe. This is the party that has evolved a viable political system that guarantees real freedom of the press and an opposition loyal to Zimbabwe (the current opposition is disloyal to Zimbabwe and violent to the people).
This is the party that brought democracy to Zimbabwe in 1980, and is now bringing the land to the indigenous people.
It has articulated the basic aspiration of our people for the land, and more land. This is the party supported by the masses of our people in both rural and urban areas.
By rejecting the views of Tony Blair and Fleet Street the Zimbabwean people have
asserted their sovereignty and the principle that they alone can and should choose their undisputed sovereign right to access the lands and all the natural resourced of their country.
That is the final chapter of the very dark history of British colonialism and settle rule in Rhodesia, characterized by brutal killing of indigenous people, and robbing them of their land and cattle.
A vote for the MDC would have meant a return to Rhodesia, and a perpetuation of the practices of racial discrimination, and colonial control by Britain.
By voting for President Mugabe and his party, Zanu PF, Zimbabweans have now finally and totally rejected that system of bad governance.
They have also signaled the beginning of a very bitter struggle for control of the vast economic resources of the African continent, especially the land, the minerals, oils, timber, energy etc..
The forces of imperialism that converged behind the puppet leaders of the MDC in Zimbabwe wanted to roll back the map of the liberation struggles that have been fought and won by the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa in the last two decades.
The victory of Zanu PF has stopped that process and revived the spirit of patriotism and nationalism among 14 million Zimbabweans.
It is indeed a victory for all the people of Africa and the members of the newly-formed African Union, and the SADC.
It upholds the gains of the liberation struggles, and opens the way for a new African Renaissance.
This act will be played and repeated in other countries in this region as the struggle for Africa’s economic resources unfolds Zanu PF will join hand with other friendly political parties to fight and win this war as well.
As this process unfolds, the mother continent is demanding to be respected by all other nations, big or small; to control the destiny of its indigenous people; and to access its own natural resources unconditionally.
That reality is now on the horizon; and Zimbabwe is leading the way.
