i see the Barrysworld servers are back to where we were
a few months ago.
i popped onto the jolt server (which was full)
and basically the guys said they are not paying for BW,
i hopped onto the Jedi servers (jolt) bang on same replies.
so i guess the people who have paid for BW,
are just in for a lonely time :O(.

Yes I agree, BW has lost many MANY players, I have subscribed but have to play on Jolt servers for the plain reason BW is a ghost town :(

Numbers will pick up in the future, although maybe not for EF.

I can't see many peeps signing up for p2p, certainly not while jolt, united and others continue to offer free servers. imo its a mistake... people wont pay when they can go elsewhere for free.

Hi All

This is all very true, and I hope barrysworld servers do start to attract more players. I must admit that I doubt if I will sign up because I really only play Elite Forces and even at £12 per year I think it would be a waste of money if there is nobody to play against.

Just as a little example think about this. If Microsoft were suddenly to say that you need to pay £12 per year to use Internet Explorer then how many people would ditch it altogether and start using Netscape or Opera, a great number I expect and I would be one of them.

It must be plain that if there are two similar products competing for market share then the cheapest one normally gets the bigger slice of the cake. This is especially true if the two product are of a similar quality.

Now I know that Jolt and United do not run the vast amount of EF servers that BW provide, but with players now looking for somewhere to play both of the above companies may decide to provide additional servers to meet the increased demand.

Oh and 1 more little thing, I run a small Disint server on weekday nights and all weekend and have found that my server is getting busier these days. This is probably not related to the BW case as my server is an FFA Disint server but it just proves to me that there are players out there that are looking for somewhere to play.

Far be it for me to say that BW going over to p2p is a bad thing in general but I do believe that it is a serious blow for the EF community, and for some of the other lesser played games, and may only drive players away to different games. This would then leave BW with about 10 unused servers, wonder if I see a little theme creeping in here!

Last point now, before somebody gets to saying that I am anti-Barrysworld let me just say that I am not. I love playing on the BW servers, although I don't visit too often these days and probably will only be able to use the bookables from now on, and The SOL Clan will continue to use the Barrysworld Bookables because they are such good servers and luckily one of our admins has joined up with BW because he plays other online games too.

Well that is my opinion on the subject so lets see if this can stir up the hornets nest and get everyone's opinions.

here we are on a friday night, 20:40 hours.. usually the 4 or 5 servers would have above 10 players on it.... what is it now....

Out of ALL of the EF servers, I can see only 2 (TWO) players in a barrybookable.. 0/16 for the rest of the barry servers....

nice move barrysworld, you really surpassed yourself this time

Maybe its not too bad for the EF community because now other server gets more attention and don't exist in the shadow of the BW servers. Maybe that makes the EF community more interesting for other server providers or private users who wants to setup a server.

This is very true, didn't think of it that way, maybe it will prompt more people to set up servers to play the games they want in the configuration they want.

Poor Pope of Rome though, wonder if he can handle any more bandwidth through his servers or will he have to reduce the opening times of his servers. But it will be nice to see his servers busy again, not just the Assim server.

Good luck to BW on this one. I can totally understand why they need to do this. In the fullness of time it may work for them, but I think it will take a while.

As long as other companies offer free-play, pay-to-play will suffer.
Has anyone ever seen people playing in the "gamesdomain subscribers only" servers?

Don't forget also, that people with fast home connections (1mb now on cable?) can easily host servers, and they probably will.

Saying that, I'm happy to pay for a GOOD service. Honestly though, this service ain't that good! The Servers lag badly of late, and the response from BW when questions/requests are made on these forums, is pretty poor. If we're paying for it, it ought to be exceptional, and better than the rest.

A better approach I think, would be to charge for League and Megagame participation etc. A lot of Clans these days, rent their own Servers, and they could possibly collect funds from members to enter - but again, it would have to be a GOOD Service.

Personally, I do have a valid subscription to BW, but when I want to play, I want to play there and then, not wait around on an empty Server till it fills (if it fills!). In that situation, I'm gonna hit the most popular Server, running one of the maps I wanna play, with a good ping!

What will be, will be.
