In July 2007, the Prime Minister announced that, as part of a consultation reviewing its drug strategy, the government would consider whether cannabis should be re-classified as a class B drug.
There is real public concern about the potential mental health effects of cannabis use and, in particular, the use and availability of stronger kinds of cannabis such as 'skunk'.
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith asked the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs to assess the medical and social scientific basis of the classification of cannabis. You can read her letter here (new window).
The council is expected to produce a report in 2008, and the government will carefully consider its findings.
Any final decision on the classification of cannabis will be consistent with our aim of reducing the harm caused by drugs, and ensuring that people - especially young people - are aware of the risks of using them.
hehe aye, cannabis these days is not as strong as it was say 40-50 years ago. Mainly due to the use of extra stuff to maximise the amount of profit the dealer is going to get from his cut.
Funny enough how it's not actually based on fact.
Gordon Brown said he'd move it regardless of what experts will say.
Not like it will effect me in any way.
"rocky" yes, but its more like in the past 10 years.
