I have been asked by a few people to do websites for their businesses.

I don't have any official qualifications in web design, but I am pretty confident at doing it.

My problem is what is the going rate?

How much should I charge for the design and administration/updates to the site?

Any budding web designers?

Mymate does flash webbys, and the like, for a grand a pop.

If you get it designed and coded by a buisness it will cost you the thick end of 2 grand.

Consider other qualified professions and how much they charge _you_; any private medical treatment is around £20-100 per hour, domestic repairs (plumbers, electricians, car mechanics, etc) are around £40-50 per hour.

For corporate jobs you can safely double those charges.

Personally, for example, if I was to repair a PC for someone's business I'd charge around £50-100 per hour, actually I'd more likely to offer fixed price for the repair regardless of how long it took, say £200-250, which is great if was like the last one I did which took 5 minutes resetting the BIOS

If you want to offer a "package" deal then simply estimate, conservatively of course, how many hours it might take, this is obviously easier than repair work and recommended, but you still need to gauge your hourly rate.

Out of interest is there any competition ? Are you actually bidding for the contract or has it already been offered and they'll only refuse if you quote something stupid.

If you are new to this sort of thing it takes a couple of bad jobs before you get a feel for it, so good luck :great:

P.S. I'm not a PC repairman by trade, I am but a simple programmer, I tend to repair PCs for friends or charity, but I also got involved in a one or two corporate jobs for private businesses by recommendation.

Heh, well the people asking are the Directors from where I used to work, before being made redundant, and their company going into administration on xmas eve. They have started something else, and would like a website.
