Fix yer f***ing servers... yesterday both Hossin and Cyssor down, gone and chars there locked.
Very nice, before 'fixing' anything just get your lag straight and your continents up !

Btw give everyone a free br who got kicked there last night.
Nothing as annoying then to fight for three hours and then bang!, continent down.

:(

LOL, you want to know what is really causing the big bandwidth problems with PS? It's the 1Gb patch just issued to all SWG-beta tester (inc. me). I refer you to part of a letter posted on the beta forums. I hope this isn't breaking the NDA as it's not revealing anything about the game itself.

Yes, this sucks, but it is the least of all evils right now; the fact is that we have tens of thousands of people all needing to download ~1 gig of data. We are currently devoting pretty much all the available bandwidth in the company to this task, to the point of affecting our customers on Planetside and EverQuest, and cannot devote any more within any reasonable timeframe. Putting the images up for download will not help, it's all the same bandwidth, and arranging an alternate host takes enough time that the downloads will probaby be complete by then anyway.

To be honest though, I can see his point. Especially as SWG is going to be the REAL money-spinner for them, not Planetside.

Hehe, that was a nasty patch: took me most of the weekend to download it (when I wasn't playing PS that is ;)).

Still, I think GOA probably are to blame.

They released SWG yet?

I kinda gave up on that game when the set backs to release totalled 1 year and counting, oh and when they wanted to charge me to TEST the game :)

Ow, very nice, so they sacrifice bandwith to get people downing a beta which then makes paying customers lag like hell and prevents them from playing ?

Sounds good...

They should fire their customer relations manager.

So they reduce bandwidth on a full release game to serve people playing a beta. Looks like to me that SOE havent got their heads screwed on right or something. I dont give a shit about SWG im not gonna play it. Fed up with mmorpg's after playing UO and DAoC.

You may not, but the millions of star wars fans that will play this just to be a wookie or something, do*. I think SOE have their minds set on the most important thing - money. And as it stands there'll be more people paying to play SWG than PS. It's a sad fatc, but alas true :(

*I am not one of these people.

But its in beta atm. Why do they have to fool around with a full release games bandwidth to support a beta.

if this is the issue then they need to sort it out - I bought this game on the 22nd of May (I think) that gives them a couple of weeks to sort it out - a week or so for me before I get so bored and frustrated with it that I hang up my ps gear :|

I dont mind paying for servers if you can actually get some game play out of them but I WONT be playing after the first month if this is not sorted very quickly.

[VOICEOFREASON]

Have any of you stopped to consider the fact that we are playing on a server in Europe?

Does anyone here know for sure that the SWG download is mirrored in the Dutch connection we connect to? If the downloads for SWG are only hosted in the US then they won't be affecting our service here in Europe.....

Blame GOA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111

Good point Jupitus although I play on Werner (EU server) and Johari & Emerald (American Servers), I get more lag from the Werner Server then what I do from the American Servers despite getting a better ping on the European Server.

If the lag was due to SWG patch then at least there's a reason for the lag (although slowing down a server that people are paying to use is not acceptable, especially when we aren't even told what's going on).

If it's not due to SWG patch, then in a way it's even worse... all this time since release and still getting very poor performance on the European Server over the American ones.

I just hope they sort it out soon because there is no way I am going to pay for unplayable servers.

Hehe, nice reasoning Jup.

And I really don't think it's a bandwidth problem anyway. I was running PingPlotter in the background when I was playing last night and, though I did see a lot of bizarro weirdness and got kicked off a couple of times my connection pinging werner.planetside.com was actually very good - just one or two lag & ping spikes over about four hours. Ping averaged 45. It was a shed load better than I've EVER had from playing DAOC.

I think there are still a few nasty bugs in the server code which are causing the lag. This is actually pretty good news as they should be pretty fixable.

Patience is the key, methinks.

It cant be the server code surely? As the same code is on US servers which i people are getting similar performance on even with the distance...

To be honest though, I can see his point. Especially as SWG is going to be the REAL money-spinner for them, not Planetside.

If my company said to paying customers that I couldn't be arsed servicing their needs (even though they've PAID for a contract with me) because I reckon I'll make shedloads of money from another customer then they'd quite rightly sue me.

I keep popping on to the PS forum to check things out - and afaik it looks like a pile of donkey-poop :(

What Trine said is true.

[CUSTOMERSUPPORTMANAGER]
Sometimes when there are problems manifesting themselves to a user it can be as a result of more than one underlying issue. These compound to give differing results under different circumstances and thus complicate immensely the whole trouble-shooting process.

The important thing to do in situations like this is to analyse the problems carefully keeping an open mind as to how the problems may lead to the symptoms and then work back through, isolating the different issues in turn to form a more balanced view of the overall problem and hence begin to correct the issues one by one.
[/CUSTOMERSUPPORTMANAGER]

Enough work hat for one day. What we have is multiple issues at different times causing similar end user problems.

Issue 1 is packet loss across several nodes in one of the main backbone providers for routing to Amsterdam from the UK.

Issue 2 is a server side problem, recognised by SOE, which they are working on.

There could be issues 3 4 and 5 which are localised such as poor pc performance etc etc, which we cannot bring into the equation.

I have seen Issue 2 - immense lag ingame followed by the server crashing and having to log back etc... I know this is different from issue one because my trace at the time in question was 100 % clear of packet loss and latency.

I have also seen issue 1 - I use a 56k connection so I am more prone to problems packet loss will cause. My regular ISP is Demon internet and the nodes my data is sent through when on their network sometimes show extreme amounts of packet loss. When this is happening I switch to freeserve and often it is resolved.

We also have a rumour that Sony may be allowing players to download their SWG patch, but frankly I am pretty certain that the download server for SWG is in the US and not affecting us.

So... what to do? Well, get traces as evidence of the packet loss and send them to Sony support. It isn't their own network with the issue, but they ought to have enough influence with their ISP to have this investigated and hopefully the routing changed. If it is the recognised server crash issue then hold tight and wait for an announcement, or of course quit playing and go away. I don't think moaning on Game.net forums is going to have much impact on SOE's bosses, sadly.
