Just received a classic piece of unsolicited shit through my letterbox this morning from BT. This is how its trying to sell broadband:

1. Download whole albums ten times faster than a modem !!! -is this legal??

2. Play bigger and better games with BT broadband!!! - what games are these id like to know?

Just typical of a large corporation that either doesnt know jack shit about one of its markets or tells lies to win new business.

I wonder which of the two it could be?

You're complaining that neither of those two are true?

Seems to me they know exactly what markets ADSL best, downloads and games.

The fact that the service they offer is inferior to other providers, and that it will no doubt be the first to deteriorate is neither here nor there.

If you are lookin to get broadband, ignore BT if they tell you that you are too far from the exchange. This is bullshit in most cases (apprently im too far from the exchange, altho im on Nildram ADSL already). If your exchange isnt enabled u r fucked tho.

Scooba and Prime Im complaining about this:

1. Assuming they are not advocating the use of p2p sharing programmes to share music (illegaly) , what legal sites allow you to download whole albums ? They may exist but I dont know of any.

Therefore I regard this marketing statement as untrue.

2. What bigger and better games can you play with broadband that you cant play with a modem? You might get more enjoyment out of the same games with broadband or play on bigger servers, but essentially the games are the same.

Therefore I regard this marketing statement as also untrue

In either case they fail to know the market because of statement 2 and are telling lies as a esult of statement 1.

Does that make it more clear.

Or are you on another one of your "lets criticise anything anyone else says" days Scooba ?

You pesky euro's get all the good and proper broadband. I mean how long is it going to take for the UK to have 8MB connections?

Too bloody long I tell ya!

1) Many sites allow you to download whole albums legally;

www.cdnow.com has many (older) albums for download. Audiogalaxy now offer a subscription service which allows you to get albums. Icrunch have albums for download. All of the above are legal and that's just off the top of my head.

2) I'd cite Battlefield 1942 as an example here, unplayable on a modem, with broadband you get to play one of the best new games on the market.

I'm not arguing with you especially, it's just that as a pretty much satisfied BTO customer the constant bashing of them by people who don't use them gets on my nerves.

I overclocked a toaster and routed it through an internet fridge combined with a pocket radio to create a 10gbit pipe that chills beer.

Ok thanks for the info Scooba, thats news to me. (we never seem to see eye to eye to date so hence my previous statement)

I have to say though that for most of the people, for which this advertising is aimed ( ie the average home pc user as opposed to the average home geek, who already know the trials and tribulations of DSL) the choice of music available, or the choice of games at present hardly warrants the costs involved. Maybe in a couple of years these statements would have some weight but not just yet.

I too am a BTO user and have no reliability complaints in 20 months of use, so Im not necessarily anti BT. However they could do a lot more to improve their present offerings to existing customers rather focusing 100% on flooding the market and their user ratio with what is after all a second class offering

Over the weekend I was downloading off Kazaa at 1600K/s. Spiderman took 8 minutes to get. It is 700Mb. All for 50 quid a year.

Do we have any advance on JANET? Anyone sitting on a 155Mbit pipe?

I can't compete with that, but at work we have a 'special' switch that sits outside the corporate firewall (for testing, you understand) that has 100Mb uncontended connection.

Kazaa flies on it. :)

Yknow what pisses me off most about BTO advertising? The fact that it's pretty much everywhere I look and yet it's not available here. I'd love to give BT my money but they won't let me.

What pisses me off most about BTO TV adverts is the lack of pr0n flying out of the 'broadband pipe'.

Misleading and a missed marketing opportunity.
