Yo!

I am off to Poland for the first May Bank Holiday for the weekend. (It was meant to be to a wedding but that's gone Pete Tong) So any recommendations on what I can do to keep myself occupied for 4 days? I fly out early Friday and have 1 night booked in a hotel and fly home Monday night?

Where do I need to go and do?

ps. This will be the first time I've gone away on my own......

Well I'd say you need to arrange a backup travel plan.

Can't change the 2nd person I am travelling with as they are staff BA tickets. Backup plan B is to make sure I keep myself occupied...

Warsaw's great. Went there for a stag do a few years ago. Shithole on the outside of the city but the town centre is nice and polish women are HOT.

If gentlemens establishments are your desired destination then there's a place called Sofia's not far off the main square by the war monument. It's fucking awesome. And it's not even my thing :D

Only just spotted this bit - kudos to you - its fantastically liberating to travel on your own - feels like a real adventure :)

Yeah. I missed that bit too. Gentlemens establishments are probably not going to be your destination then :(

There's a fair bit in Warsaw but have you thought of renting a car to have a pootle about? Massively expand your options that way...

I loved travelling on my own but only because (ironically) it encourages you to meet more people. When you're travelling in a group you can by definition be more insular, on your own have to mix or you'll eventually start climbing the walls. I think the max continuous time I actually spent on my own when I went round the world for a year was about five days.

A guy I work with done similar a few years ago with a friend, he was mad though and went to the concentration camps dotted around Poland. He said its the most memorable places he's been to and seen with his own eyes.

Its kinda one of those morbid things to do while your there. Just to see the history and the scale of what happened.

Missusvae and I went back in Nov 05 for a few days. She had spent 6 months out there teaching English to blind and partially sighted children a few years previously so got to know the city a bit so may be able to give more information.

The salt mines at Wieliczka are wonderful especially the church with decorative freizes made entirely out of rock salt. One thing you could consider doing is a joint trip with Auschwitz in the morning followed by Wieliczka in the afternoon.

In Krakow itself the Jewish quarter is worth a look and so is the castle and the central square.

When we were there we were taken out to quite a nice restaurant called Restauracja Ogniem i Mieczem (pl. Serkowskiego 7) which translates as Restaurant of Fire and Sword or Flaming Sword. The speciality is a sword as a shish-kebab which is then lit in front of you at the table.

I can't remember where we stayed except that it was east of the main square and was quite nice.

If Deebs goes there with his nose they'll be calling him the new messiah :D

I found the salt mines quite boring if im honest, but the rickety elevator back up made it worth it.

You HAVE to visit auschwitz. Even if world war 2 isnt your thing, just go. Its a surreal experience and one that will stir up emotions inside you.

Oh, and try the 90% vodka in the city centre :D

We stayed in a hotel, but there are plenty of hostels in the city centre.
