Warning about IBM 120GXP drives

I got one of these drives a few weeks back, and last night I did a defrag on it and saw how sh*t hot fast they are, excellent performance.

Imagine my surprize when I read that IBM does not recommend leaving these drives on for more than 8 hours/day !

http://www.theinquirer.net/08030205.htm

Anyone experienced problems using these drives ? Perhaps IBM is trying to avoid a similar situation with the 75GXP.

Most people know that IBM drives are fast but stink on reliability.

I didn't, and the two IBM 34GXP drives in my main machine which have been running 24/7 for the past year and a half don't either, apparently.

Older ones are fine....60GXP onwards are problematic.

I knew the 75GXP had problems (pending a current lawsuit), but I thought the 60GXP was fine.

I hope my 60GXP is fine, it's making some strange noises, like a kind of grating metalic sound :(

I've knowed 60s to go but 75s take off....some believed it was down to heat problems which would mean newer, faster ones, would most probably increase the likely failure rate.....although a lot of people don't believe it is heat related.

Speaking of hdd reliability who would you recommend?

I've currently got a 70Gb IBM 75GXP, but for obvious reasons I want to buy a new hdd as an emergency backup/alternate in case the worst does happen.

Recommendations?

I used to use Maxtor and IBM drives equally, they are just as good as each other.

Why not go to Storage Review as mentioned in the article ? In fact I thought they closed down through lack of cash, but I'm glad they're back up again, great review site.

The only drive I've ever had seize up has been a Quantum.

Saying all that, I recently dug out an ancient 130MB Seagate (ST1144A) for use in my Linux Firewall machine, it spun up after 6 years laying in a cupboard, and it seems to be running fine right now (its on 24/7 and has no sleep mode spin-down facility).

The 60gxp has problems just like the 75gxp did. My 75gxps are still fine but my 60gxp is in a terrible state now and only works half the time. Makes some bad noises sometimes too. Just waiting for the Western Digital one I ordered to turn up so I can ghost it and send the ibm back for a (hopefully better) replacement.

Seagate are my fave, I've built a few systems with 20Gb drives and they are totally silent...

I guess these HD's aint recommended for downloading HUGE Files then? I mean if you leave your comp to run thru the day while downloadin a Good Quality Vid thats quite large you could have some problems..

and plus i leave my Computer on for about 2 hours before i play CounterStrike, and when i play CS i play for like 7 hours a Pop..

My two Hard Drives (both 17GB) are Maxtor, sod knows what there Part # is tho

I was tempted by the Seagates, dunno why I plumped for WD specifically but we'll see how it goes.

I had a 30GB Maxtor die on me, and the IBM stories worry me, so current I have a 40GB Seagate and a 30GB Western Digital. They are a little noisy, but a drives a drive, and compared to the case fans they are all sweetness and light.;)

There's a fan somewhere in my PC and it goes all the time (no it's not the case fan), and it's fucking loud, and I do mean LOUD.

Gonna have to take the case off and have a look while it's on to see wtf is making the racket.
