any help muchly appreciated : ]

edit: i have no ambition to play anything new on pc other than WAR and wow if war turns out to be crappy so doesn't have to be a wtf-pwn pc, just updated a fair bit. this junk 6 year old pc (2.4 ghz, 512 ram, 128 meg cheapy gfx card runs wow) and hard drive doesn't have to be huge i don't download

The specs for the game are as follows:
2.5ghz P4 or equivalent
1gb ram
128mb graphic card with pixel shader 2

At least that is what it state on the box.
I have the following

3Ghz dual core duo chip
2gb ram
256 mb ram graphic card.

Even with this I still get ctd though I can run the game at a reasonable ftp. Id personally recommend going higher than that stated on the box as it will struggle - particularly in ftp and ctd. If you are going for a laptop you are not going to get what you want at the cheap end of the market. Biggest problem with laptops (and some budget desktops) is that the on board graphics are totally inadequate for gaming. I would ask folk what they have and use and see places like PC world (not my favourite source) but they have some useful advice.

With such an old computer it would be better to just buy a whole new system as you would have to replace almost everything.

If you can say how much you're willing to spend I can list parts for you.

I'm in the same boat as you, but this computer is only 3 years old, but I'm going all out and buy a new computer. In total costing me just under 1,700euros, but it will last me for at least another 3 to 4 years :)

I got a new PC just before WAR came out, mostly because I was in dire need of a new one anyway.

I got a;

Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0Ghz
Asus P5Q-E Mobo
ATi Radeon HD4850
Antec Sonata III case
4gig OCZ Platinum
500gig Samsung Spinpoint F1
Arctic Cooling Freezer Pro
Netgear wireless card
Vista Premium
and I paid for saturday delivery, as my laptop went kaput, and I had a deadline on monday.

All in all, Plays WAR perfectly, Havn't had one CTD, but occasionally suffer's from these nasty memory leaks that everyone seems to suffer from.

Got my stuff from www.aria.co.uk for around 600 squids.

Could lower the price if you get rid of Vista, get the smaller 350(?)gig HD, and take out the Cooling (but I recommend keeping that in).

Oh and I bought my DVD drive from PC World, which is a bugger because the only one they had in stock was an all singing- all dancing DVD drive for £30.

I play mine on a Dell Inspiron 1520 (one with 8600m graphics card.)

Got it off the dell outlet for less than £400 delivered :) upgraded to 4Gb RAM for about £80 from crucial.

As long as you have a decent core2duo processor, 256mb graphics (Dedicated) and 2Gb + ram, you'll be fine. HDD frankly don't really affect Warhammer that much, I should know, mine is pants but game is fine and I'm "in zone" just as fast as anyone else.

If you have the cash to spend then go for the build that I'm in the process of building, hopefully when I get paid at the end of the month:

Case: Cooler Master - Cosmos S
Mobo: ASUSTeK P5Q-E
CPU: Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550
Heatsink: Thermaltake DuOrb
RAM: G.Skill MQ Series 4Gb (2x 2Gb sticks)
HDD: 2x Samsung SpinPoint F1 640Gb
GFX: Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 1Gb, this maybe change to an ATI 4870 X2 2Gb once they release drivers to allow dual monitor setup to work currently with this card.
PSU: Corsair TX750W
DVD: LG DVD RW
Soundcard: Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Plat (taken from this computer)
Extra fans: 3x Cooler Master 120mm (Blue LED)

Total: 1,639euros

Cooling would be done by 7 fans. 1x 200mm fan, which is built into the side panel of the case. 6x 120mm fans, 3 of which are cooler master stock fans that come with the case. The heatsink due to the dual fans can also help to solve any heat flow from the northbridge chipset of the mobo and also the ram.

This system can be overclocked without any problem what so ever :)

Nice system, very similar to my own.

What is the overclock on the CPU with that cooler? And what temps do you get?

I haven't got the system yet, but I can tell you the following in regards to the CPU and overclocking it.

It's been said you can raise the CPU Ghz to 3.4 without raising any voltages. You can easily hit 4.0Ghz with water cooling, but with the fan system that I will have I imagine I could get to 3.6/3.8Ghz without any overheating problems.

This is information I googled in regards to this CPU and how good it's for overclocking.

The temp of the case and system should be very good and with the amount of fans I have going including the heatsink it would be similar to water cooling, but then again I've never had water cooling before so I'm just guessing.

A Quad-core isnt essential for gaming, in fact I've heard Dual-cores are better in that respect, unless you are doing video editing or rendering and stuff like that.
I guess it's more future-proof though :)

Pikeh is correct. If you don't intend of doing any video editing or using 3d studio like programs there is no need for a quad core. One of the reasons I'm getting a quad core due to my After Effects and Sony Vegas useage :)

If u are just looking for a cheap system, go for a dualcore around 3ghz, a 8800gt and 2-4gb ram and a decent hd, spinpoint from samsung is very fast and quite cheap. should run the game smooth :)

You don't really say what you want from a laptop, do you want it to be able to play high settings at 1920x1200?

If so but you don't mind a heavy one, I got a Precision M6300 with a quadro 3600m 512MB for not too much money, but you can get others fro cheaper. I don't mind dell and I like their warranty. Just don't go an buy a bling laptop with lots of lights it's a waste of money :)

Also as this game does work much better in SLI don't get caught up in the marketing hype for that either :)

I use (prices exclusive of VAT)

From Ebuyer

Coolermaster Cosmos RC-1000 Full Tower Case £85.09

ASUS Maximus Formula Republic of Gamers iX38 Socket 775 8 channel audio ATX Motherboard £128.33

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9300 2. GHz (FSB 1333MHz) Socket 775 L2 6MB Cache Retail Boxed Processor £148.45

BFG 8800GTS 512MB GDDR3 Dual DVI TV Out PCI-E Graphics Card £137.91

Creative X-Fi Xtreme Gamer Soundcard - Retail Boxed £48.96

Samsung SpinPoint F1 HD103UJ 1TB Hard Drive SATAII *32MB Cache* - OEM £64.64

Arctic Power 700W PSU - With PCI-E, 4x SATA, 20+4, ATX12V, 8pin +12V Connectors - Retail Boxed £35.10

LG GSA-H55LBL 20X DVD±RW/DL/Ram LightScribe Black Bare Drive - OEM £15.58

Logitech G15 Keyboard Version2 - LCD GamePanel - USB £42.82

Razer CopperHead Tempest Blue 2000DPI Gaming Mouse £30.47

From OCUK

GeIL 8GB (2x2GB) PC2-8500C5 1066MHz Black Dragon DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GB24GB8500C5DC) £149.98 (well, got it ordered, will come next week)

Vista Ultimate 64 *cough free cough*

Total £1042.62 Inc VAT

And a random Acer Monitor from Tescos for £100 or so, I will also be buying a legal copy of Vista next week too so add another £100 on to it.

I built this over the course of a few months so most of the parts will be cheaper now and if I was to do it again I would grab myself an ATI card as they are far better value for money at the moment.

It still stutters with WAR due to me only having 2 gig of fairly poor ram in it atm, 2 gig of 800mhz OCZ something or other. handles anything else I chuck at it with ease, due to Mythic being unable to make a program that doesn't have some sort of in-built memory leak its horrid for WAR and usually crashes within an hour or so play time.

Absolutely right, a lot of us don't buy a new rig solely for gaming :)

Don't buy the 1066 BD, you can get 8 gig 800mhz BD for less than £100 and you won't be able to tell the difference.

Thats a nice budget spec. Nothing overkill, but just enough to do the job.
