Have you ever dreamed of leaving it all behind and running away to join the French Foreign Legion?

Can you do this ?

An 8 kilometre run carrying a 12 kg rucksack that must be completed in less than an hour.

Running as far as you can in 12 minutes. Anything over 2800 metres is a good run.

A 16-obstacle course that averages from 3 to 5 minutes to complete.

Climbing a rope without using your feet. You will have to ascend and descend as many times as you can without stopping.

A 100 metre dash carring a sandbag that weighs approximately 40 kilograms. Strive to complete it in less than 20 seconds.

8 chinups with your palms away from you as you grip the bar.
30 pushups.
50 situps.

The French Foreign Legion

You can join the Legion at any time. Its recruiting offices are open 365 days a year.

Heh, while those requirements are quite impressive they have nothing on the US SEAL's or the UK SAS :)

The problem is not really entering the Foreign Legion... it's serving in it without losing the will to live that is the hard part.

and yet still they surrender with ease :)

the french foreign legion is well hardcore, they are pretty much the equivilant of our special forces, the reason why they are better than the french army is cause 3/4 of the people in it aren't french :p

I did consider joining the legion awhile ago, but apparently you get paid feck all! :p

I guess, still according to Wikipedia - this is what you require to even be allowed to join into the real qualifications(Hell Week, where you get about 1-4 hours sleep a day and the rest hardcore training, apparently only about 5% makes it through).

Wikipedia said:
Assignment to BUD/S is conditional on passing the PST, which requires the following minima:

* 500-yard (457 m) swim using breast or side stroke in under 12:30
* At least 42 push-ups in 2 minutes
* At least 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes
* At least 6 pull-ups from a dead hang (no time limit)
* Run 1.5 miles (2.4 km) in boots and trousers 11:30
* Members’ vision must be no worse than 20/200 in both eyes. Vision must be correctable to 20/20. SEAL candidates may qualify for PRK surgery to correct their vision

Again, the above are the minimum requirements necessary to qualify for BUD/S. Prospective trainees are expected to far exceed these minimums. Competitive scores are as follows:

* 500-yard swim using breast or combat side stroke in 10:00 minutes
* 79 push-ups in 2 minutes
* 79 sit-ups in 2 minutes
* 11 pull-ups from a dead hang (no time limit)
* Run 1.5 miles in boots and long pants in 10:20

I couldn't find anything on the net about the SAS training, but I know from watching some Survival TV(random channel I found) about 20 work-out a holics who got the chance to try it, they all failed - within 20 days, all I really remember is that they were sent to Boreno's jungles and had to train shithard with the heat and humidity.

And regarding joining up, its almost as easy as the french foreign legion - atleast for the SAS. All you have to do currently is ask the American ambassy for a visa to enlist in their army as they are having problems themself, after 2 years you will - unless you fucked up majorly be allowed American citizenship. The UK military is however, closed to everyone except people born in the UK.

Tbh I'd like to hear a professional opinion on that one =)

Those guys are definately hardcore, but they lost some of their purpose :p In the old days you could go there and just say "Hi, I'm John Smith and I want to join" and they would not ask for papers. So when you had served your 10 years, you were John Smith with french papers. Now they check papers, you get a new identity while serving there but you get your old ID back when you leave.

Sometimes you could even join the Legion instead of going to jail…or well, just join the Legion and escape justice =)

Actually one of the main reasons people join the legion currently is because after serveing 2 years you do get a French citizenship, physically fit people considers this an easy way out of the hell they came from(biggest ethnical groups in there are apparently people from Africa and eastern Europe).

I think its just dumb to judge a military organization based on how hard the physical requirements are for getting in. I mean, physical performance is just one thing that a soldier needs and you get to train more than enough during your service.

The main ethnic groups in the legion today are eastern european and south american. Africa is quite well represented too i think.

you forget the "french" part of the equation here.

5 minutes into a shitstorm fight the white flags come out.

What's the difference between Frenchmen and toast?

You can make soldiers out of toast.

You really have to hand it to the French

After all they won't fight for it.

How many Frenchmen does it take to defend Paris?

Nobody knows, it's never been done.

How can you identify a French soldier?

Sunburnt armpits

Tremors from the Chinese earthquake were picked up as far away as Paris.

Naturally the French Government issued their unconditional surrender

Why do the French call their fighter the "Mirage"?

Because it's never seen in a combat zone.

ba dum tish :)

Apart from Mossad, the SAS are the best in the world at what they do.

The Foreign LEgion was not designed to be an SAS-type unit originally.

The Gestapo

The Gestapo is slang for the branch concerned with the Legion's internal security. They will interview you in your own language on all aspects of your life. The days of joining "no questions asked" are a thing of the past. Honesty is your best policy when talking with the Gestapo. Based on what you tell them, they may decide to change your name.

hmm :confused:

The french have been beaten countless times. There own sucess story is the invasion of england.. Which was conducted by the normans (then not part of france). The french have an impressive loss score when compared to other Western countries.

Yeah they lost alot but the real mocking of the French for it has come about in the last 100 years or so, before that you really didnt want to mess with France - despite its tendancy to loose alot, it was still a scary power that very few countries could match.
