I live near Leeds, but I cant imagine the salary being good enough to pay the CSA after Mrs Wil kicks me out for being such a retard and applying for the job. :(

Testing sucks. It sucks hard.
It's not just playing games, it's playing broken games, repeatedly, till you're sick of them, and then playing them some more.
It is a good way to break into the games industry though.
One other thing - most testing jobs are not well paid, think minimum wage and you're in the right ballpark. :p
Oh yeah hours - will be crap, but that true of any job in games. ;p

...well...after 4 years of making graphics and some gamedesign(international games, so big budget), i went to a new company as a tester(lucky i'm out now...)

But i was called internal quality assurance and got paid more for the title :p

But yeah, it's a pissa** job and i wouldn't want it for my worst enemy. Like dans said, you play broken games, long hours, weekends(if deadline is coming), test connectivity...click...click...click....(5 hours later)....click...click...argh-boom!!!.....click...click...

And all in all not for the weak of stress.

But, it's a way in, so if you like games for the games and not for the pay, hop on in.

Yer I did for ages before quitting to uni. And like the other guys have said, it's not fun and games at all. Major stress, majorly frustrating and annoying and huge amounts of pressure. You don't even want to know what happens if a game fails submissions due to an unfound bug. The hours are crap, the pay is low and you get no respect and yet work your damn arse off.

What's even more annoying is when the developers simply won't listen to you as "they know best". No, you do not know best until you sit there and play the same game over and over in every little detail for 8 months. THEN you know what is best. Stop listening to shit music, browsing porn and playing pro ev all day developers and get some fucking work done.

There's only been one developer who IMO work the right way, and give everyone the respect they deserve and that's Sports Interactive. Really friendly bunch but boy do they know how to fucking work. Never seen a team more dedicated and tight knit, and it shows in their games.

Some developers should really be shot, they are the scurge of the world of QA.

On the plus side though the job does have a few (limited in availability!) perks. There's a chance you'll get to work on a game you love, and when you do there's nothing better than being able to hammer it to your content - I've had the chance to do this with a couple of games and it really does make the job enjoyable. But it gets very boring, very stressful and very repetitive very quickly. It would all be worth it in my opinion if only the staff were treated fairly for the effort and skills they bring to the game: all QA want is a wage you can live off, and some respect. However, scapegoats are needed when things go wrong and there's nothing easier than passing the buck to the lowest level.
