New Poll

Posted By: Sanya Thomas 2006-04-04 17:38:42

Today's login poll has to do with the different tools we're considering putting into the game for you to communicate with each other. In game email, voice chat, bulletin boards in the cities or maybe on your houses, or instant messaging that allows you to IM people inside the game even when you're logged off, and vice versa. And of course, "none of the above."

Later this week we've got a really specific crafting poll coming up, so stay tuned.

-----------------------------------------------------------

This is what WoW has isn't it? Not sure how it will affect lag, but I suppose it's got to be a good thing?

And hopefully they make crafting more interesting because at the moment it is PISS BORING :>

Would I rather spend hours making armour for small profit, or would I rather fight in RvR? The choice - well - there is no choice, RvR all the way as it's FUN.

Tbh Neocron was the 1st MMORPG to have ingame message boards (real forums actually) and a very nice email system. (Didnt like the interface for the chat system thou. :)) It also has a cool ingame player info interface similar to the infamous GOA XML (but its actually working!).

The ingame chat/forums/email have been done before. However, i'd love to be able to chat "ingame" from something like msn.

Yeah, I was thinking about that too a year back when I was basicly forced to take a break from DAoC due to financial issues. It shouldnt even be too hard to do. All you needed would be a little application able to connect to the chatserver.

Winamp is your friend. I have one of those multimedia keyboards with a few extra buttons so I can control Winamp from ingame.

The "chat in-game from outside" was something that was really sweet in FFXI. Made work so much more fun ;)

Anyone else think that all these polls are just a blanket for what they plan to implement in W.A.R.?

In game email would be handy, if only for trading items. Just because its been done before, shouldn't stop them adding it.

not sure if integrated voice comm is a good idea giving the already stressed servers and bad connection

but I think integrating instant messaging to bridge in-game and real world communication would be revolutionary (and imo will be part of any future mmorpg)

in-game emails would be nice as well

looks like someone is keen on beta testing stuff for WAR :)

in-game mail is so WOW isnt it ?

any new revolutionary change is welcome as not as it doesnt mess things up more than they are already are

i dont think that msn/irc etc etc etc is that welcome ingame
msn is there for its reason, irc is there for its reason

i dont find voice coms are useful, people have their 90ping ventrilo free servers already, and its prolly making connections issues worse when we have voicecom too in the game :x
another reason i wouldnt use goa voicecoms is cos they are gonna be monitored 100%, my relationship with authority was always bad,(ie: spamming the word radar in pms to my buffbot only to flood the "hotword" autologging system of daoc when bored etc ;D), imo its just that they wanna control us more than they are already doing, with daoc voicecoms^^

would love to see autocraft system like in wow, easier system takes same time, but can be done afk
i havent got mxn movie thing to work for me yet tho, so dont know what you talking about, im using movie players with always_on_top setting when crafting instead ^^

read my post, I mean like the one that wow has right now, since its the only example of ingame mail i personally know of !
im sure it has been there b4 wow, not like wow made any innovations to the mmo playground, just got a lot of stuff together in a single game !

You do know the game is run by GOA and not the FBI don't you?
Seriously not wanting to use voicecomms because "The Man" might be listening ......please. I somehow think they will have more to do that trawl through 1000's of players conversations just to listen to one person say "Radar!"

Still if they are all after him...leaves it wide open for the rest of us to get up to all sorts muhahahaha!!! And we will be able to get up to it via voice comms and in-game email as well !!!

One thing I do wonder though with additional comminication channels - especially from outside the game - would that increase x-realming by making it even easier to communicate from outside the game..

Bah forgot to include the quote I was replying to ..

Cross realming can happen in many ways already. Voice servers irc etc. So providing an integrated voice channels would be fine anyway. I am sure that they would Realm Based anyway, when accessed from within the game.

I don't imagine I would move away front the setup I already have. But it would help alot of people in random groups, who still use text during RVR.

OMg !! there's actually another daoc player whose played neocron ? nice hehe as you're the only one in 3 years i've seen mention it other than me :p

Yes the email and boards were v handy, but the clan wars in their home apartments ruled , esp when using a Doombeamer ;) P.S. i played Uranus server...

Back on the topic though, seeing as most guilds now use TS / Vent i'm not sure if the comms system would be worth it [ like in Planetside most outfits still use outside systems ], the IM service might be nice, as would an ingame board... but that would prob decrease the usage of FH and other sites boards.

The player interface would be cool if it worked like Neocron also, and the crafting system was pretty nice there [ i loved the fact i was greatly needed to blueprint any weapons if ppl wanted slots[ mod slots ] on their new ones, which i got my RL m8 to craft for em :D New trades might work, like farmers for food items, you could fish, create a seperate skill line for these to integrate etc. SWG had some nice ways to go about crafting also.

i have a strange feeling the ingame voicecoms would have 2 much delay to be practical in rvr, already the delay on a roxstar swehosted vent is kinda annoying ;/

since the voice comms are being supported 3rd party currently, i dont see a need to synch an integrated voice comm with the game itself, so they could be completely independent of the game servers (and hopefully not even in france). Problem solved! But, they'd need to be on fast accessible servers ofc.

i like the idea of a "package" system. Legend of Mir 3 had one, and ffxi etc too iirc, if you were in a town, you could "send" items through an email type system, was very handy and cut down on pointless waiting around. there may need to be some tweaking to avoid abuse but other than that

I think alot of people are missing what an opportunity this would be for in game voice communication.

At the moment we all use our different voice servers, teamspeak, ventrilo etc. Now at the moment for instance with ventrilo, we commonly use 2.1.1 - 4, since it allows the hoster to support many channels.

So effectively we are utilizing an old product. Which means we are using older codecs (codecs are used to compress audio/video), so the quality of the voice we hear and speak, can be of a poor quality. Also I am sure you are aware, ventrilo at a server level defines the codec we use to communicate with each other. So it may enforce a higher compression codec, to reduce the bandwidth used by each user. Which again decreases quality of the voice traffic.

A large company like GOA, may provide alot more bandwidth for our voice communications, which could improve the experience.

Another point -> Development. Where Mythic go, others like blizzard/sony may well follow. Which would increase the amount of development that goes into the products we use on a regular basis. Since it would create a market, where companies would be willing to pay for vent or teamspeak to be seamlessly intergrated into the enivronment we spend an unhealthy amount of time in (Well my Partner thinks so ... of course I disagree).

NOTE: To the person who was worried about people listening in on the voice chat ... program like are skype are not easy to track at all and are causing alot of headaches in the "Listening" community.
