Hi all :)

Having trouble with my new computer and wanted some advice/help if possible please. I'm running the 32 bit Windows vista Premium.

Any game I install, except daoc, wont run when I double click on the icon. It does nothing at all. My disk drive is working fine as it installs the game ok but it just won't load them up. :twak:

Any suggestions please?

right click on the shortcut, properties, click the "compatibility" tab and then play with the options there.
Usually "run as administrator" is sufficient

Hi - I've tried that and still no joy. It goes to the part where you have to confirm that you want to run the .exe and when I click allow, it disappears and no game load. Even tried running it as an xp on compatibility but still no joy. Have three games that this happens on and two that it doesn't!

Any advice greatly appreciated. :worthy:

Thanks Chronic.

1st of all im asunming you have accepted the UCM popup or adjusted it

Football Manager 2007/bow
dont know of any problems with vista and this so can only say make sure your runing patch7.0.2

Battlefield 2142/bow
make sure you have bf2142 patch1.40 1stly
did you try and delete your 2142 proflies file in your bf2142 flles should reset all your fx and sound settings
also punkbuster can cause problems

found this clicky cover the lauch/loading problems with bf2124

Medieval 2: Total War/bow

would leave it for the mo as it know to cause BSOD quite a lot

other thing to try include fiddling with your setting see code box below it what you should do after installing vista imo

Code:
Configuring UAC

To configure UAC options, either run 'Local Security Policy' from Admistrative Tools, or enter secpol.msc in the Start Menu Search Bar and press Enter.

1. Disable switching to the Secure Desktop for UAC prompts:
Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options ->
User Account Control: Switch to the secure desktop when prompting for elevation - Set to Disabled
Now, when you get UAC prompts, the screen won't go grey, the UAC prompts will use the Aero theme, and you can still operate many other programs without needing to respond to the UAC prompt:

2. Change UAC behaviour
Security Settings->Local Policies->Security Options ->
User Account Control: Behaviour of the elevation prompt....
You can configure UAC to either:
(Administrators:)
- Elevate without prompting
- Prompt for Consent
- Prompt for Credentials
(Standard Users):
- Prompt for Credentials
- Automatically deny elevation requests.

Using this setting, you can control how much of an intrusion UAC is without completely turning it off.

-2--------------------------------------------
Disable Security Center Notifications

To disable the red or yellow icon in the tray and the balloon notifications (Such as "UAC Is Turned Off" or "No Anti-Virus Detected") Go to the Control Panel. Now go to Security and then Security Center. Now in the left side panel you will see "Change the way Security Center alerts me". In the window that opens up, select "Do not notifiy me and do not display the icon"

-3--------------------------------------------
Windows Vista Keyboard Shortcuts

A full list of keyboard shortcuts in Windows Vista can be found here: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/e...8dc5661033.mspx

-4--------------------------------------------
Enable Aurora Bootscreen

In the start menu search box, type "msconfig" and press enter. In the window that appears, go to the Boot tab. In the Boot Options section at the bottom, check the box next to "No GUI Boot" and click Ok. Now the next time you boot up, you will have the "Aurora Bootscreen".

-5--------------------------------------------
Configure the start menu power button to Shut Down

First, open the Control Panel, select "Hardware and Sound" and then "Power Options". Now in the left side panel, select "Change when my computer sleeps". Now click "Change Advanced Power Settings". In the window that opens up, go down to Power Buttons and Lid and expand it. Now select "Start Menu power button" and change the setting to "Shut Down" and click Ok.

-6--------------------------------------------
Quick Find a program in the Start Menu

To quickly find a program in the start menu, just type in the first few charaters of the program's name in the Search Bar located at the bottom of the new start menu. Then, the program which closest resembles the characters you entered will be automatically selected. In this example, I have searched for notepad by only entering the first few characters:

-7--------------------------------------------
Enable Administrator Acount

Right click on ''Computer -> Manage -> Local Users and Groups -> Users
-> Rightclick Administrator -> Properties -> Uncheck ''Acount is disabled''.
If you want your Administrator acount as the only primairy acount.
Rightclick on Your Username -> Delete.

With the Administrator Acount you don't have UAC or any other things you can't change or edit. Full Privileges

Thanks the input so far.

Is there a possibility that it could be my graphic card driver? Considering that BF2142 and Medieval USED to run on my machine right but now it won't and the fact that I've configured all the UAC and xp option could explain it?

I'm using a Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTX. Where could I find a back dated driver from say 3 months ago? Any good websites?

I alos checked on the Football Manager 2007 website and most vista players have no trouble with it. Now when I load it up, the screen flashes 3 times and then nothing. Could that be that the program doesn't like my driver and therefore refuses to run? (Not very technical but hey thats me!)

Any help appreciated as usual.

Download 3dmark06 to see if your gfx card is at fault from here:
Futuremark - Download
It's a benchmarking tool but for the purposes of seeing if 3d is broken it servers its purpose.

If it doesnt run seems like its your gfx card rather than vista,
try uninstalling the drivers, running driver cleaner in safe mode, then reinstalling to see if it makes a difference

If it works then freezes/crashes/bombs out to vista with a driver fail error it may be your gfx card is overheating, download some monitoring software such as rivatuner
RivaTuner
and monitor the temps

Ok come over from the techie thread. Things i suggest are running DXDiag and checking directdraw acceleration is enabled, or rolling back to version .64 drivers. I don't know about the other games, but others have had issues with version .65 drivers on Medieval TW2. Its usually related to Vista not recognising the drivers as properly installed, in both 32 and 64 bit Vista.

Hope this helps.
