Virus scanners - which one to get?

Are there any good scanners apart from Mcaffee or NAV?
Maybe even free ones that will do a good job and get regular updates?

A friend of mine swears by AVG - a free scanner. Just can't find an adress.

If you online bank with the halifax...you get free use of pccillin 2000...which is ok coz its still fully supported for engine/definitions

I use McAfee and have done so for years. I have never ever had a problem with it. I've scheduled it to update itself once a week, and this works just fine too.

NAV 2004 is going to be using anti-piracy registration methods a la Windows XP, so I have heard.

Still, I recommend NAV, in fact I recommend going for the Norton Internet Security package which includes NAV, Firewall, Anti-spam and Ad-blocker.

And get it on download from the US site, where the dollar price is much cheaper.

I've used the free AVG version before and had no real problems. However I'm using AVP (Kaspersky) as it seems to detect bloody everything and handles archive files better. Plus the virus database updates are a lot more frequent than AVG (though I never tried the commercial version so that may be better in that regard).

I've got Macafee installed at the office but I've had problems with that. Norton, not tried recent versions so I can't comment.

i use norton, the only trouble is that it needs paying for every year...

although the firewall helped me bust gator!!!

US version only I do believe, Norton did toy about with activation on a limited run of the 2003 version...although they dropped the price a bit.

I always get Norton myself and it actually has worked on occasion. I've not had an active virus for 4 years now.

I'm using Norton 2000 (still, god bless the reformat?). Anyway, I've not had an active virus either although I'm getting plenty of trojans slipping through. I'm getting 2004 soon though for new machine, so hope that does the job
