Violence in Games

Interesting article about regulation in games. And it is refreshing to read someone who doesn't just want to ban them all.

I'm a bit swayed by his arguements. But then again, I do play CS, and I am sick of kiddies cheaters playing a 15 rated game.

Opinions/thoughts/flames/tumbleweed below please.;)

I reckon that games should not be censored or toned down, but instead a greater education for parents in particular about the game age rating system and to get parents to actually start caring what their kids get up to on computers instead of ignoring everything and then blaming society/the media/the government/games designers/everyone except themselves when a news bulletin from the USA about a school massacre flickers in front of their eyes.

the blokes an arse, and has a large motive being involved in legal cases against the game industry, makes him slightly biased really.

No reasonable person wants to ban alcohol, tobacco, guns, pornography, sex, or automobiles.

What a retard.

edit: Having said that, he seems to be only suggesting tougher laws on who can buy violent games. That I'm all for.

That's what I mean. He is portrayed as a hate figure who wants all games banned, but he plays them himself, he would just like to see controls on who can buy them. That said, if controls are put into place, he is out of a job.;)

Just leave us alone, if they all had their way we would never have had CS, Battlefield 1942, medal of honour, wolfenstein 2.

they must hate Max Payne

A lot of that, in context applied to the UK is pretty much moot. What he's after for US gamers is pretty much what we already have in place with the ELSPA, VSC and BBCFC bodies currently rating games.

The guns thing aside (fuckin retard yanks and their gun obsessions ffs), I agree with him. Kids should not be playing graphically violent/morally dubious games. And yes, I think that kids under 15 should not be playing the likes of CS etc.

Mainly because they're a lot of wankers ingame.

:p

Parents are lazy, but at least we have controls here to stop, to a large degree, kids walking into a shop and just buying something we know they shouldn't be playing.

Even with controls in place, parents haven't the first fucking clue. They see it's a game, and just KNOW that it can't possibly be suitable only for over 18's.

You would not believe the amount of parents we've had in pre-ordering the likes of GTA Vice city for their little 10 year old Timmy. I've been tempted to tell them time and time again that I'll refuse to take the pre-order if it's for a kid, but as long as a clueless parent is placing the order we can't refuse it.

Parents are 100% to blame for their childrens problems. It's about time they started taking some responsibility for them. They fucking spawned them in the first place. Stupid fuckers (literally).

And to think they want to ban smacking, little kids from time to time need a good smack.

How many times have you wished a parent would control their little brats on the train, bus etc with a smack

bulldoody. you control your kids with your personality and your brain. if you have to raise a hand to your child you may as well hit yourself for being an idiot.

on the other hand I know nothing at all of being a parent so I may well be wrong. it's just my opinion

Bah! i got the odd smack but only when more naughty than usual. Eg hitting my little bro on the head with a mug,

It should not be for all instances but if verbal commands dont get through then smack the little shit. also blokes should be careful, women though know how to do it the proper way.

I think smacking is fine, but at £25 a throw it's costing me a fortune :(

Lets face it, violent games are more fun than the boring ones.

Violent games = good.

People who get swayed by games to do things in real life = retards.

yes I know.... and we haven't had a masacre that could be related to computer games here.... (at least not to my knowledge)

Hmm must be because we don't play computer games and drink tea....... nothing to do with strict gun, knife, fucktard and pimpmobile control now is it?

sorry to lower it to that but hey........

Calling for tougher laws on the sale of violent games is presenting as a fait accompli the notion that there is a direct link between violent games (tv/films/comics/delete as appropriate) and antisocial or violent behaviour in children - something for which there is no evidence whatsoever to support. Never has been.

Children old enough to operate a mouse, keyboard or controller are more than capable of distinguising between fantasy and reality - and if you ask me the violence in the real world (watched the news recently?) is far more damaging than anything in some pixellated game world.

Shoot kids with guns when they are naughty. Not only will they be properly punished but they will learn that guns really hurt and that violence is not funny.

There's an undeniable logic there.

A vote for Wij is a vote well spent!

I thought if you wanted to shoot kids with guns you needed a pneumatic cannon sorta device?

PS: I actually think it would be vastly amusing, but i'm a twisted sicko.

I dont have a problem with them wanting to put the proper certificates on games (12, 15, 18 etc), but the very notion that playing games makes you want to kill peopel, or even gives you the knowledge on how to kill someone is utter utter bulshit.

Ive playd quake type games for at least 5 years now. If you put a rocketlauncher in my hands now, i would have know fuckin clue what to do with it, and cetainly no deisre to fire it at people, I might like to take it out on a proper range with an instructor and let rip, but theres no harm in that ;)

I would even know what to expect when firing the likes of an MP5 (recoil etc), although its obvious what to do with it.

I remember a lettter sent to PZ Zone years ago, just after doom 2 came out, reading :

"i play Doom and Doom 2 a lot, avidly in fact, I own a shotgun, and I have a chainsaw in my garage - i am clearly now beyond hope and will soon be out murdering people left right and centre"

Anyone who considers murdering someone else, is mentally retarded and would do it regardless. There were no games, no violent films in the 19th century, but people still got murdered (look at the wild west for example - even going back through to pre-history they have found remains of people who were murdered). Basically human nature can be shitty, and if someones a killer, they are a killer, they dont need a game or film to push them over the edge, because they were already over the edge, although a game or video may well give them ideas on how to perpetrate the crime.

You could use the same arguements to say certificates on films are wrong. But lets be honest, we all accept they are worthwhile. So why not have the same in video games?
It gives parents an easy guide to what is more mature subject matter, the scheme being properly enforced will give it extra weight with the parents, and it will stop these stupid law suits...

"That kid shot someone because he plays Doom"

"Well, he shouldn't have been, and legally speaking, we said he wasn't allowed to"

Case closed.

What really gets me about stuff like this is when they say playing violent games trains you in the use of weapons. Not sure how moving a crosshair on a screen with a mouse teaches me to correctly operate, aim and control a real life firearm but apparently it does.
