Video Problem?

Recently I've been getting a lot of cs crashes. It happens randomly, and usually cs just hangs, the sound cycles the last second or so again and again, and I have to hard-reset.

Sometimes, the screen goes mad (lots of purple/green horizontal lines), with a black box where the mouse would be. I can still see something of the game, and everything still works, I can even quit cs and go to windows, where the problem persists.

I have a Matrox G400 (a fairly old one now), with the latest bios/drivers etc. What do you guys think? Is this a video problem? It's worth noting that cs is the only game that crashes like this. BTW I'm on Win98.

Yea, same happens to me.

Never used to happen with ATi card. But then I was running in software mode. Now with m8's GF2 I get lock ups at the worst moments :/ Especially as rebooting is only way to solve it.

Most of the time I lock up as I'm about to rape someone or Jobbie is about to rape me :(

Its bloody annoying whatever it is. I'm gonna reinstall hl and cs, and direct x too. It's happening once or twice a day now.

I hope my gfx card isn't buggered, I got a fucking massive kitchen bill coming up and I can't be doing with computers to pay for.

This happens to me when I try to minimize CS, I think why it does it to me is because it crashed while switching fromCS resolution to desktop resolution...:/ dunno 'bout you

Damn it crashed again - although the screen going mad hasn't happened yet, just cs looping.

Can be quite funny if a radio is being used...

"FIRE IN FIRE IN FIRE IN FIRE IN FIRE IN....."

Get this - I replaced the latest Matrox drivers with some that are about a year old, and installed the TurboGL package.

Performance is actually better! It hasn't crashed yet either.

I get this as well, much more often than I would like to, screen hang with repeating sound. I'm using a GF3 tho, I think its a server problem, as a week ago 50% of the people in a bwcsl match crashed like this including myself when I adminning it.

Well it hasn't crashed once. Just goes to show that 'make sure you have the latest drivers' isn't always good advice.

Ok well I'm running in Direct3d now, initially I couldn't see any decals, bulletholes, blood, that kind of thing. A quick trawl around the internet and newsgroups brought me to this:

(in the console)

gl_polyoffset "-0.001"

This moves the bulletholes etc away from the walls slightly, so they can be seen (I think). Anyway, that sorted it. If any of you guys have flickering blood/sprays on walls close to you, try changing this value, keeping it -ve.

I also figured out how to set my maxfps, check what frequency your monitor runs at in the resolution you play in cs, and set cl_maxfps to that value - eg mine was 85Hz, so I set it to 85.

I discovered some more recommendations as well:

ex_interp 0.02
ex_extrapmax 1.2
cl_nosmooth 1
cl_smoothtime 0.1
cl_vsmoothing 0.05

Anybody have the slightest idea what these do? ex_extrapmax was set to 1.2 on my system anyway.

they where the settings i was given when i was on 56k. I used em so it would cutdown on Lag.. which it did very well :D

GRRR it just crashed again, which leads me to three possibilities:

Something is faulty
Soundcard is suspect
Some software/hardware is interfering

I might try buying a better soundcard with surround or something, cheap though. Since cs only started doing this a couple of months ago, something must have changed to precipitate this.

That is a possibility, although I do have a clean hl/cs install. How would I be able to find out?
