Do Microsoft make it so that joysticks etc dont work with later versions of windows?
Im sitting here with 2 USB joysticks (the precision 2 usb joystick and the plug and play usb pad) that I'm almost certain should work. I dont fancy formatting my machine just to test the theory that Microsoft have stopped them working under XP (what im currently running)

Joystick
Pad

Just about to crank up a game of mame too. So if anyone has either of these fellas, and has them working on XP, or has any info, that would be top.

PS, I've tried another machine with XP on with the same results (unknown USB device) - but no way to try on another OS.

You need to install the sidewinder software.

Well, they say its certified, but if you look at the specs, the dont list any of them supporting XP. The gamepad dont even say it supports a winnt kernel (but I was almost certain that I'd used it with 2k).
I just cannot believe that both have broken in 6 months or so.

TBH it should work with XP since they have it in there Q&A, plus Joysticks etc are fairly uncomplicated devices so I don't see a reason why it wouldn't.

On a kinda related note, is it possible to plug Xbox controllers into a PC (directly or via an attachment)?

I've got XP and I have a sidewinder pro gamepad and a sidewinder joystick. Both just plug in and work with whatever drivers windows xp came with.

If you do get it working remember to choose the right primary joystick in advanced options. :)

lovedaddy try this

  • Open Control Panel
  • Choose Game Controllers
  • Click Add
  • Scroll down to Microsoft Sidewinder (Auto-Detect) and select it
  • Click OK
Sit back and wait for XP to detect it and install the relevant drivers.

still no joy

Tried that, the only thing it seems to want to pick up is a SideWinder 3D on my soundblaster Live gameport.

Which I dont actually have.
