vague problem

I was wondering if anyone knows my problem from the symptoms I'm about to descibe, im running on a 56k modem, been fine for quite a time, but recently i've stared to experience lag for no apparant reason, at the most random times, my packet and latenacy just drops right out, when its bad it can happen every 5 mins, but normally randomly and annoingly. I just recently installed quicktime on the computr, I was wondering if that could have a effect, uninstalled it to make sure, but these sorts of programms never fully leave the system. Anyways i knows its abit vague, and before you blame it onthe 56k,got a cople of friends who play perfectly. The computer is a p4 with Gforce4, 512 ddr and a nice fast 7200 hardrive.

Do your couple of friends run on the same network as you? Could you take your PC round to their place maybe and try it there? That would tell you if its your connection/ISP or not.
You could try using their modem/net card to eliminate that as the problem.
I doubt quicktime has anything todo with it.

Run some spyware software like adaware or something to check for some spyware.

Also, check for applications you have running that might have some "Auto Update" feature enabled.

Spybot search and destroy - I've downloaded this and I think its just that bit better than adaware (you can immunise against repeat installs for example). Give it a whirl, it's free.
