v.92

new V.92/V.44 modems, which offer compressed throughput that exceeds 300 Kbps. The new modems will even do quick connects and let people take phone calls during an online session. Add two-line bonding and you have 600 Kbps.

I'm in the market for new modem, because mine is a soft modem, which I think causes a long delay in downloading the first page once connected sometimes. ( I know because I have 2 computers)

should I get a v.92 modem ( sounds fast reading the above), or instead just get adsl?

Get ADSL, or a cable modem if you can. Most ISP's don't support V92, though the Barrydial does.

hmm, but isn't it a matter of time before they do, i'm on blueyonder btw.

I'm also thinking of getting a external creative modem blaster (works with linux), which is v.90, can I upgrade it to v.92 in the future if I need to, such as using firmware.

I don't know about the firmware issue, I don't know that much about the standards to be honest. From what I have heard about V92, it offers a slightly better upstream performance than V90, though I may be talking crap there.

But a cable modem is the way to go - £25/month against £10 for your unlimited dialup, plus your line rental (£9.60 for a second line iirc and i do;)) and the speed - 512k vs 56k

And they are offering a month free if you sign up this month.</pimp0r>

get ADSL, its cheaper in the long run if you use the internet alot. but be careful with which provider you go for.

ADSL, Cable Modem, tough choice. ADSL costs more, but the upstream is better. It all depends what you use the net for.

V92 has an better upstream. can't remember what it is though!!! think it is 32k, rather than the current 28k 'I THINK' correct me if I'm wrong people!!! :) anyway the greater upstream will help on-line gaming

V92 has'nt really taken off, I think there is only one unmetered ISP that supports it in the entire UK!!!

Go for Cable 'if' you can get it or ADSL. But if you are like me and can't get either you may want to get the V92, so at least you can use it when isp's start using it more.

I believe it's 56 down and 44 up but the modems normally come loaded with V90 and then a disk that will update the firmware to V92, only to be done when your ISP supports it.

rings a bell Emb, thats 44k upstream for V92, and 32k for V.90 then?

I think you can upgrade to V.92 even if your ISp doese'nt support it. The modem will drop back to V.90 if it cant negociate with V.92.
