after playing Q3 for some time (well since the demo/test was 1st out), i could'nt wait to see how UT was going to fair agianst it ,
needless to say "i think" UT blows Q3 away !!! , my moneys on UT dudes , where's yours ??.

I'm not sure this will mean much to anyone but this UT vs Q3 debate is a little reminiscent of the Duke Nukem vs Quake debate way back from 1996. Duke was more polished and pushed to the limit "old" technology. It ran better on existing machines. Initially at least many people preferred it's graphics to the soup-stained Quake. And the players moved faster too. About 6 to 12 months after its release, however, the world belonged to Quake. Hardware had caught up with the engine, and people had become accustomed to 3d.

Now UT is certainly more polished than Q3A. It certainly runs faster, which in turn means it looks better IMO at the same speed because it can be run at higher resolution. Speed and control are issues, there's certainly more of both in UT.

So at the moment I'd say UT has the edge, but I wonder if we're again thinking too much of the present and not enough of the future. Granted the differences do not appear to be as fundamental between UT and Q3 as between Duke and Quake, but back then the differences didn't appear fundamental either.

hmmm, tough one this.....

somehow i just can't feel that UT doesn't have the 'accuracy' that quake has :/ don't really know how to describe it.....

i saw someone say it's more 'fun' than 'competitive' which i agree (ish) on - i don't really see myself playing UT as seriously as q2 (maybe that's a good thing if ppl were less serious)

of course i hope i'm wrong cos UT KICKS ASS!!! IT'S ONLY A DEMO BUT IT KICKS!!!!

oh and q3test is total shit with nice gfx

I dunno if it counts for much in this argument which is sure to rage for many many weeks.. but games are meant to be first and foremost, fun to play. If a game ain't fun, its pointless playing it.

Quake 3 test isn't fun. Nice graphics, but basically Q2 with a little bit of colour.

UT on the other hand is the most fun I've had with a mouse and keyboard since MegloMania. Its combined all that was right with QW and Unreal, and the net result is an absolutely stunning game that is extremely fun to play.

Let me amend my previous remarks slightly. UT looks better than Q3 at the same framerate *if* you have a 3dfx card. I've just seen it running in D3D mode. Ugh, and slow too. More work on the engine needed methinks.

IMO, they both rock. however UT has to have the edge seeing as it's a full demo - q3TEST rocks out as it is, and it ain't a demo. I have mucho faith in q3, when the demo comes out, we're gonna flock back to the master. however, will someone please d/l nerf arena so I can shoot a sponge at y'all?

Here goes ........

1. Frame rates - ut has the edge but q3 runs fine on my old(ish) pc with V2 sli

2. Graphics - ut again, but please remember that q3 is a test and i fully expect the final levels to be upped in the flash stakes :}

3. Snazy interface - ut again!, but personally i prefere the utilitarain approch of quake 1/2/3 ....

4. Net Code - Q3 easy !, ever time i have played UT (newest version included) it has been as laggy as hell, and the player movement feals terrablly jerky after u have played q3 for a while.
I also get the disconnect icon on a regular basis when playing UP
P.S. i am a isdn user with an average ping of arround 60 in q3, so good no's what its like on a modem ........

5. Fun Factor - Q3 {controversal i no :}} i find q3 far more involving and get more feedback from other players, half the time, when i am playing ut, i cant tell when im playing a bot or a real person !
(this might have improved a bit since i was last on)

6. Not Online ? - ut is great fun in single player mode, but ill have to wait and see what q3 is like :}

personal opinian - Q3 is great and ill probally stick with it but if u dont i hope u enjoy UT :}
