UT "Newbie" needs some advice

I got UT installed last night and was wondering what I need to do to get it running sweet.

My background is about 2 years of Quake2 and Quake3:Arena, mostly playing online in team based games (CTF).

I've installed the 420 Patch, I will be downloading the extra map pack and the Inoxx maps later, can anyone suggest any other critical downloads ?

I have an Athlon 700 and GeForce2, for my initial setup I chose Direct3D because I was not too sure of the OpenGL capacity of UT, can anyone suggest how I can maximize the GeForce2 ?

Any quick tips on tweaks for FPS or internet connection ? I noticed a 3D sound option, I have a Vortex2 A3D soundcard, does this option work, is it effective and is it a big performance hit ?

Finally, I'd like to convert all my Quake3:Arena configuration files so I get something similar for UT, is there a guide to the differences between the two ?

Thanks in advance.

Essential downloads I would say are the 4.20 patch and the Bonus Pack. I'm not so sure that the Inoxx map pack is an essential download, was a bit dissapointed with it, lot of better custom maps out there.

is a good site if you are ever looking for custom maps.

You might also want to look into mods like SWAT and Strikeforce if you like Counterstrike style games, I've not actually got round to trying them yet myself so can't comment too much on them.

As far as tweaks go, I think you are better sticking with D3D for now, but someone who actually has one of those cards could probably be of more use than me. A few tweak guides you might want to have a look at are ....

As far as config files etc, UT is nowhere near as flexible as the likes of Q2 I'm afraid (not really played much Q3 so can't comment on that). For some tips on alias/config editing you might want to try here tho ...

Ta v. much, sir.

I'll look into the config things, at the moment I can't get the Control to accept function keys or number keys as weapon shortcuts.

Also I need a UK/European Gamespy master server for UT.

You can certainly use function keys and the ctrl keys, perhaps you need to edit the user.ini directly rather than using the in-game preferences though, not sure. That french frag factory site seems to suggest that UT can't tell the difference between left and right ctrl keys though (same for the shift keys), so you might want to keep that in mind.

As for master servers, Barrysworld have one: http://utmaster.barrysworld.com:8090

Yeap, stick with d3d, open gl is just godd for me when I'm alone in the map, in the "confusion" it gets really nasty (I have a tnt2 ultra).

binds: just edit the user.ini (the easier way), and no, UT can't tell the diference between left and right control.

OK, OpenGL just errors, but I'm getting good performance in D3D so I'm not worried.

I'll go through those config/tweak websites, I need to do some benchmarking first.

Now my problem is Gamespy, all the servers are coming up as "unnamed", I've got the latest (registered) version - any clues ?

Many thanks for advice so far.

I've had nothing but problems with GameSpy, at least with UT. PingTool wasn't much better for me, same with UnrealServices.

The only reliable server browser I've used is the one inside the game itself, which is a pain at times.

don't worry about OGL erroring, tis lame & stupid & crap :D

no idea on the lamespy front, I don't use it for UT.

GF2 is the best graphics card out there and you shouldnt be having any probs

to get the most out of your card you should be looking to up grade to Win ME

i have just done that and now get 60fps (smooth) at 1600 x 1200 hehe and i thought it was good in 98 im sticking with Win ME thank you :)
