UT Lan problems

I am new to this Forum. Please forgive me if this question is either too old to be raised again, or if I should be asking it in a different place.

I just installed a gateway (D-Link 704) between my computer and my son's, so that we could hopefully play UT against each other. I bought the gateway so that I could more easily set up a cable or DSL modem at a later date. Currently IP addresses are set up so the gateway is .1, my son's computer is .2, and mine is .3.

I try to start a multiplayer game, then have my son join my LAN address. He enters the game and we both begin moving around. My player functions fine. Unfortunately, his player periodically "locks up" for 10-20 seconds, usually after firing on me or a bot. By the time his unlocks, he has been killed standing around.

If I try to just play a single player game on his machine it works ok (other than being sort of jerky).

He is running a PIII 450 OCed to 540, 192MB RAM, and a 16MB TNT video card. I am on a TBird 1200 OCed to 1333, 256MB RAM, and a 64MB GF2pro video card.

Any ideas on what might be wrong? Thank you in advance.

Addition to original post

Oh by the way...
File transfers and most other games seem to run fine across the network as it's set up at this time.

Have you set the networking options to LAN rather than Dial up?

hoi

ok letz try something:

* open your unrealtournament.ini with the editor.
* search for cache (game cache not editor cache)
* and set it from 4mb up to 3/4 of your ram eg. 256mb - 192

now it should work fine!

for other infos how to make a server plz look @ TheAdminPage

read everything and you will become the greatest lan server :)

Ignore the stuff [HMW]SadButTrue said about cache size. It's nonsense.

Are you using a dedicated server or a listen server? It sounds like you are playing UT on the server itself? In which case what spec is the server?

Thanks for the feedback so far.
Yes I am set up for LAN, not modem.
I tried the cache idea - didn't make any difference.

Any other ideas?

Yes I am playing on the server. What did you mean by the "spec of the server?"

I have seen something about setting up as a "listen server," but I don't see this option.

If you have a 3rd machine that runs as dedicated server you'll notice less lock ups.

What Cryton means is that a dedicated server runs on a seperate machine and the only thing it has to do is run the server.
A listen server is a server that is at the same time performing duties as server and is the machine in which is being played.

Two guesses:
1) the listen server is hogging resources badly
2) you have to adjust your netspeed. You can change this in the options/ preferences/ network menu. Perhaps one of the two computers is running on a higher speed than the other, maybe the listen server is on the lowest netspeed. And lagging your sons machine.

But to really make sure what the problem is, setup your PC as dedicated server. You can do this by going to the multiplayer menu, start multiplayer game, setup all settings and then hit the dedicated button. This will set your PC to be dedicated server and if the lag problems still exists it might be your network settings.

Although I must say your sons 16 Mb TNT Vid card isn't the bext to play UT though. Try switching his detail level to lowest setting on both the world textures and the player details. This might also speed up things. Also make sure stuff like dynamic sound and EAX or A3D sound support is off it's lags badly.

I hope some of this helps :)

Thanks for the feedback, but no, I didn't solve the problem.

Someone else suggested that I download a GL patch and try that in place of DirectX on the second machine. I don't know if it will help, but I haven't tried yet.

Before the suggestion was made about setting the PIII/TNT machine to low detail, I had already tried it. Not much difference. The game plays ok on that machine, even at high resolution, if playing alone. It's only when trying to network that it grinds to a halt. I would think that all of the resource strain would be on my machine, since it's the server, not his.
