USB Cuts out

Hm, recently, all my USB peripherals have been going haywire...

Im using a 4port USB hub for all the stuff, which is Alcatel Speedtouch Modem, HP PSC750 Printer, MS Intellimouse and a Webcam.

I say "haywire" as in, everything stops working at once, i get disconnected from the internet, my mouse stops working etc etc... but if i reset everything works fine until it "dies" again...

Im on Win2000, and as i say, its all only started happening recently..

Is it a powered hub ?

I'd first discover which device may be causing the problem, see if you can connect one at a time in another USB port and see if that solves it.

Alternatively you can try enabling the additional USB ports on the mobo, most have them nowdays.

Otherwise go see the USB Man.

Well, the USB Hub is powered by Mains its called..:

PSION Gold Port 4-Port USB Hub

Ive never had this problem before... and i know all the devices work when they are plugged into the Computer (and not the hub) so it has to be the hub... perhaps its "surging" causing it to stop working?

You running an athlon system and is your modem one of those stingray jobs?

Yeah... the Alcatel one...

Altho since ive switched to WinXP ive yet to have a problem with the USB failing..... hmm (Had it in for about 5days)

Yeah I had this problem.
For me the answer was to get cable instead. I tried powered hubs etc but the problem was the power to the USB would still invariably fail. I think its to do more with the Power management built into the Mobo so may depend a lot on your mobo but people I talked to suggested

PSU (...i got a 420 Watt one (and a good make)...didnt work)
Powered hubs (....yep I got that......didnt work for me)


The thing that got me onto the Athlon problem was the fact that it worked a treat on my sons pc running the same OS but with a Pentium 3 cpu, so obviously taking less power.

As a result BT lost my custom for internet and phone and I've been happy ever since.

The obvious way around it would be an ethernet ADSL modem. Dunno if you can get those these days but the PCI slots can supply more power than the USB.
