Upload/Download bandwidth

Does uploading decrease the bandwidth available for you to download? Talking about ADSL here I don't really know much about how it works ;)

Short answer yes. If you are uploading and want to download at maximum speed at the same time try to cap it at about 16KBps (this is a figure based on experience rather than any calculation of the upload potential etc..)

you can have a 512k dl going on AND a 256k upload.

Lies. When you download or upload, you use some bandwidth going the other way. You have to request packets of data, and confirm they are received.

Otherwise how does the server ur downloading off know u still want the file or what part of it u want?

Its uses upload bandwidth to d/l and vice versa
