I can sort you with an athlon 500 modded to 750 with globalwin cooler for 325 quid...
Gotta use a 300w PSU and Asus K7M mobo tho if you want one...

Overall, heres the lowdown:

celeron - excellent value, fast FPU, generally kewl chip. Overclocks well... I can hopefully soon get hold of some 366's that do 550+MHz for like 75 sheets... guaranteed for 1 yr to run at 550 too.

K6-2 and 3 - fast integer performance, bit pants for gaming and SS7 platform is a twat with agp2x graphics cards... dont buy st this stage...

PIII - again, fast cpu/fpu, has SSE multimedia enhancements, overclocks easy, just not that cheap... 450's known to do 600 - i think they are bout 150 nowadays?

athlon - smart, fast FPU and CPU, overclockabke (if u know how to solder) have 3d now enhancements... fast and desirable...

really, anyhting but da K6-2 and 3 (and cyrix!!) is a good buy

466 will do 525 easy, 581 possibly too...

Only thing is its multiplier locked so u can only change fsb's to get the above speeds... this is a bit of a prob as the fsb's required cause (or could cause) agp and pci probs... more info at www.pcinfo.freeserve.co.uk/ppga366.htm on how certain FSB's cause certain PCI and AGP bus speeds.
