Upgrading Computer Help

I'm going to be upgrading most of my computer soon (MB,H/D,CPU,Memory and operating system-WinXP) and i'm not sure about how DAoC will be affected esp with the new hard drive and WinXP.
The new drive will be ata100 compared to ata33 which should'nt be a problem...but does anyone know what is the best way to transfer my DAoC files from my old drive to the new one without affecting the characters.
It would'nt be a problem normally (i think) but i will be cannibalizing part of my old system (monitor, sound card, floppy,DVD drive) which will not make it possible to use a null modem cable? (or will it).
The other problem is that my version of DAoC was the Beta (Cd would'nt work with my DVD ) and patched using my CD key.
Can anyone give me a few pointers....i'm hoping someone has upgraded a computer whilst playing another mmorpg at some time.
Cheers :)

if you are intending to upgrade your o/s or indeed your hard drive just flatten the lot and start from scratch. Your character sets are not stored locally only your config files ie what dictates how uve set up your quik bar , screen res etc . This can easily be set up again and isnt worth backing up. Just a simple case of installing the game, letting it update and assigning your skills to the relevant quik bars and you will be away.

If you are talking about IDE drives, once youve built your new machine you can always attach the old drive & copy eveything you want over (as Ozwin sez, not worth the time for DAoC on its own as the important stuff lives on the server anyway) - even if the old drive was win9x (ie FAT or FAT32) you should be able to see it under XP without any problems I think ?

Dont forget that you need to change the jumpers on the drives so that the new drive is the master & the old the slave if you connect them to the same channel on the IDE controller - probably best to put the old drive as master on the second channel if you are worried about doing this.

Thanks for the help guys (sets my mind at rest that the DAoC local files do not have all the important info on them :D )
The rest of my stuff i can re-install from the discs.....although as i said above the disk version does not work with my DVD....so i will want to transfer the DAoC folder (unless someone knows where i can now get the Beta version from)
Cheers

Ive probably still got a copy of the Beta client install knocking around somewhere - let me know if you find you need it.

Did we ever find out why they bothered to copy protect the distribution CDs in the first place ? seems a bit over the top given that you only actually have to use the CD to install the game & then need a unique key to use it ...

Also bear in mind null modem cables are slow, it would take about 10 hours to transfer DAoC. :p

Same kind of subject... I just got myself a new machine, which unfortunately comes with WinXP (I had Win2k until now, quite happy with it).

I seem to have 2 problems (mainly :)):

- zonealarm does not seem to remember my choices of authorisations from one boot to the next. it's a pb because I need to 'crash' DAoC a couple of times to go back to Windows and allow ZoneAlarm to let DAoC upload/download

- I can't seem to be able to 'crash' (i.e. Alt+Tab or Windows keys) from WinXP... It worked rather too well with Win2k though.

So basically since I had my new machine I haven't been able to play. I could disable Zonealarm altogether but as I'm running ADSL i'd rather keep it in the background...

Any idea anyone ?

if you have ADSL check that if your router has a firewall in it, then you can disable zonealarm ;)

on my machine winkey works fine for "shortcut exit" uses, and zonealarm only asked permissions for daoc the first time.

On one of my comps ZA wont save changes unless I set the allows for the programs, close ZoneAlarm down fully then load it back up. I guess you might have tried that already but it's worth a go if not.

If you think its ZA locking your pc, waiting for you to answer the authorization prompt in the backgroung, hit alt-A (or was it alt-Y). Should allow DAoC to connect. Then just exit normally and manually give DAoC the rights to always connect to the net.

Tanks Sami,

Yesterday I turned off ZA and entered DAoC withouth problems so I am pretty sure that ZA is the cause of my problem.

I did not know about alt+A (or alt+Y) thing that that is a great tip mate ! Will try it tonight for sure !

Second question:

As I think I said below, I am switching machines... I want to transfer all my email history (address book, archive and emails) onto the new one. I found the archive and emails files (I think) but can't locate the address book file. Anyone knows where I should look ?

Thanks guys, you are a really good bunch !

I recently re-installed my machine after a hard disk failure. I however did have backups of my game save, mp3s, etc. So not a complete loss. Anyway...here's what I did...

Backed up my DAOC directory.

Re-installed windows.

Installed a fresh copy of DAOC from CD.

Renamed the freshly installed DAOC directory to something else. (ie daoc.new)

Copied back the original DAOC directory that I had backed up and put it exactly where I had just installed the fresh copy (before moving ;) ).

This negates updating your DAOC to the latest version as you've already done it. Also your friends lists and various windows locations for ALL your chars are as they were :D hurrah :)

Having re-installed from scratch, I can tell you that the only downsides are the download of the patch (13MB to date), which, fair enough, takes some time.

Otherwise, your friend list is stored on the server and the only thing you loose is your quickbar organisation. As I keep tweaking and changing it, it was not a big loss anyway.
