Thinking of upgrading my board and chip.

Currently I have a 1GHz AMD and a nice Abit KT7A-RAID mobo.

I may as well double the speed or better. At the moment I have the choice between a 2GHz AMD or a 2.4 P4. Both are not much difference in price (£30). Any recommendations?

I was also thinking of this motherboard (Abit BE7-RAID) for the P4 Chip. Anyne got this combo?

I want to have a RAID system.

I assume you mean an XP 2400+(2Ghz) Vs a P4 2.4Ghz.

Well since you seem to be starting from the point of getting a new motherboard too then you might as well go with the P4 2.4Ghz, the below article can show what you can do with the P4 2.4Ghz if you're willing:

If you upgrade regularly, which it seems you don't, then jumping into the P4 range isn't wise since they generally cost more and more over the equivalent XP processor.

Hate to hijack whipped's thread but doesn't seem worth starting a thread of my own.

I too am thinkin about upgrading mobo and processor - 1.3ghz athlon and shitty MSI mobo at the mo. Anyone got any ideas on when the optimum time to upgrade would be?

I was thinkin of waiting till the next gen of chips come out then buy some of the current range at low prices (hopefully.) I didn't take a loan this year so really strapped for cash, wondering if anyone had advice to offer for me budget upgrading plan.

Tar mateys.

just get one of the .13 chips, either p4 3gig or 2.8 xp then that should do you, I don't see the point of upgrading every 5 minutes

what could possibly need more than 3 gig processor?

its about time they got past the 640 kb base memory limit

Ok, this is the list I have come up with so far.

P4

Processor : P4 2.4 (Socket 478 FSB 533) £172.79
Board : Abit BE7-Raid £97.46
Memory : 512 DDR PC2700 £93.99
HDD : 2 X IBM Deskstar 120GXP (80 GB) £168.02

Total : £532.26

AMD

Processor : Ath XP2400+ £139.60
Board : KD-7 RAID £93.34
Memory : 512 DDR PC2700 512 MB £93.99
HDD : 2 X IBM Deskstar 120GXP (80 GB) £168.02

Total : £494.97

Recommendations?

Well two points, the first being that the XP 2800+ is still not available in this country yet.

A P4 3.06Ghz costs some £550 to buy and I think you'll find Cask is unlikely to want to spend that much.

Since you're starting fresh Whipped I would go with the P4 solution.

This is what I ended up going with :-

Processor : Athlon XP2600+ (333MHz FSB) £215.66
Board : Asus A7N8X £114.87
Memory : Corsair 512MB DDR XMS3200 CAS2 DDR333 £167.26
HDD : Western Digital Caviar £92.18
Total : £589.97

That's all including the delivery which should mean my new machine is up and running by next weekend.

Those hard drives are loud as tits.

I would go with a seagate barracuda or.. something.
