Upgrade advice :)

OK here's the deal... I've got a tbird 850, 512mb ram, gf3, scsi drives, blah blah, nice system but getting a little slow. So, going to upgrade and the option that's tempting me atm is an athlon 2100+, new mobo and DDR ram.

But, I hear murmurings that there's new athlons & P4's out soon? 566mhz fsb's (or is it 533, dunno) etc. So is it worth me going for the 2100+ now or should I wait?

And if I do decide to go for the upgrade now what's the best mobo to get? I'm not interested in overclocking, I want reliability & stability.

Thanks for any suggestions anyone has :)

Erm ok guys, thanks for all the really helpful info, you guys rock </sarcasm>.

:p

Anyone out there slightly more knowledgeable and able to comment without starting an "I can piss further than you can" contest as soon as RAM gets mentioned? :)

Well, sensible advice? In the hardware forum?

There are lots of new developments coming up, the 533MHz FSB P4, and the new Athlon core, but If you want to upgrade now, the Athlon XP gives you better bang for your buck, since it doesn't require expensive RDR ram for optimal performance.

For motherboard, anything on the VIA KT-266A or VIA KT-333 should do the job.

Don't upgrade yet.

There's no games coming out imminently that will *Really* require more than you already have.

Wait a few months - then get one of the new breed of Athlons that are coming out (can't remember exactly but I think it's the Thoroughbread core manufactured on a .13 micron process).

Even if you don't go for a new athlon the XP2100+ will have come down to a stupidly cheap price so you'll be able to whack the extra 150 quid you'll have either somewhere else on your PC, on games, or my personal favourite - down the fucking drain after a few pints :)

When you put max settings on quite a few games will require more.

Yes the Thoroughbread core is manufactured using the 0.13 micron process.

lol, however bear in mind no matter what you purchase it will be old hat in a couple of months ;) Waiting to get the latest technology is OK if you can afford to wait ( IE: Deal with a Slow comp!) No one wins with keeping up on technology. Some may say this sucks, some like meh think this is why the PC owns ( IE: Compare the X-Box to the PC is a years time and you will see what a I mean!)

A little light reading over your cornflakes :D

And whatever you get granny be prepared to upgrade in 1-2 years time!!! :p
