Does anyone know of a way I can discover which application I need in order to open a file that has no file extension?

I have a file and no idea what I need to open it. A Google search has thrown up several possibilities but all have so far proved to be shite and lacking in their ability to work.

Help.

Damn you, Gray! If I knew the file extension I'd know which application I needed to open it. Now get out!

Dunno, try opening it in a viewer see if it has a header you can spot. Other than that no idea guv.

Hmm. I tried that using a utility called Peek which extracted the text contained in the file, but there was no clue as to what the file might actually be.

That boy is our last hope...

Is it mostly text? If so try sticking a .rtf on and opening it in Word, if you're lucky the convertors will kick in and recognise it.

It's an archive of some sort, but WinZip and WinRAR have no idea what to do with it.

Or it could be an ISO, but as above.

*cough*

I suspect its a bin file. Hmm. Now how to get at it?

rename it with the possible options and see what happens.

www.isobuster.com will open it to let you see whats in it, or if it is a BIN etc...if it is do the following:

The IsoBuster-Method (Extract your image to hd to burn it afterwards)
Open your image with IsoBuster and right-click the "joilet branch" (the one with blue arrows..) and select "extract directory". Choose a empty temp directory on your harddrive to extract the data to. When this is done, start Nero. Simply choose "Burn data disc" on that freaky wizard. Grab all data from your temp directory to your new disc and change its name to the one displayed by IsoBuster. You can burn your disc like every other now.
You can use this method on nearly every image, but you might loose some extra information. Some people say "WinISO" can handle even more images than IsoBuster, so if IsoBuster can not open your image, try this one instead.
