Apparently, Saddam Hussein wants to run in the upcoming elections!

above link said:
...
[Saddam's lawyer] Stefano said that there was no law that prevented Saddam from appearing on the ballot. He added that Saddam hopes to regain his presidency and palaces via the democratic process.
...
Stefano remarked that a recent Gallup poll indicates that 42 percent of the Iraqi people want their former leader back.
...

Can you imagine what would happen if he gets back in and "our boys" are still over there...?

Is he not being tried for war crimes though?

He can win the election but what good would it do if he's in some prison?

It's a strange position though isn't it?

I think, ideally, from the "wests" point of view, he should be allowed to stand and (hopefully) be soundly beaten in the poles. But if he's not even allowed to stand, and if 42% of Iraqis want him back, that could easily start a civil war - which may see him back as a dictator (albiet with a large majority backing). I mean, your avarage Iraqi probably sees Saddam as a pussy cat now, compared to what the west are capable of! Considering Saddam is one of the few anti-west Arab leaders - he may well have the proverbial grass-root support. I read that the interim guy isn't liked/trusted by anyone (the west or the Iraqis)!

I suppose a lot of what the west does might be dependant on what our plans are with Iran. Iraq is a good launching pad for an Iranian war - but then again by getting/letting Saddam back behind the wheel (so to speak) he could do it for us! (roll the clocks back 20 years!) "All is forgiven 'ol boy! Now here's another billion, get back to work!" It would also stop him singing like a canary at the trial!

Personally, I think he won't be allowed to stand in the elections but there'll be a civil war anyway - irrespective of who wants control and who is supporting who! I guess it's bound to happen at some point innit? I'm sure all the political pundits have been saying that all along.

If there is nothing to stop him, then let him do it. Then, when he loses (which would be inevitable), perhaps he'll realise what a twat he is.

He wont be allowed to run for three reasons;

  • America wont allow it
  • The interim government wont allow it
  • He'll probably be dead before the election

To be fair - if it's to be a true democracy we'd have to let him stand...

...but lets face it. It's gonna be a puppet western government to make sure we can meet our energy needs until 2040.

Winner! :D

Anyway. As for the quote. Twat? Yep. Agree completely - but then we're killing innocent Iraqi's (along with the bad guys) at a rate that far exceeds the total rate of injury for the entire coalition force. Doesn't that make us twats....?

Fuck. I'm in an argumentative mood today :(

imo Scouse has the right of it. also I don't think Saddam is going to die any time soon, unless his own country takes over and does the dirty deed so to speak.
