Case = Lian-Li PC-70 (w/ window kit and black neon, but this doesn't really affect performance :p)
HD = 4 x IBM Deskstar 60gb or 120gb

very nice, but cast your eyes over mah PC-70 :D

i needed the 6 5.25" bays btw, so i couldn't have got the koolance if i wanted to :(

Well, my 3 bays are full now. CD-ROM, CD-R and backup unit. When I buy a DVD I'll need to ditch something.

Obvious candidate is the generic CD-Rom, because the DVD-Rom should be compatible with CDs :)

Well I'd remove and burn the two skanky components from that system the AMD cpu and that VIA shiat

I'd dump that speaker and get a proper 5.1 sound system

I'd hold the gf3 and get the gf4 and replace xp home with pro

On a side note does anyone know anywhere I can get a HD craddle?

if you mean a removable caddy, then you could look at Scan.co.uk under IDE Controllers & Caddies... :)

You practically run a tech site. Go away. :p

do you run RAID because you can, because you want to, or because you reeeaaaaally don't want to lose your data? :)

striping? over how many drives? and what is the actual speed increase like?

I have two in the stripe. The speed boost using Sandra to test was from 1 drive of 24000 to the two drives which have managed 35000(MAX) but the real impromevent is the way it's quicker to open files etc which is nice :)

Let me put it this way...I'm not going back :)

hmm, i have a lot of questions about this... let me number them to aid your answering :p

1) i have 4 drives on the one RAID card. the way i see it, there's no real way i can get a significant enough speed boost to justify halving the space i have. if i put one from each channel into a stripe, then the data will be coming from either one of the two (or both, if i set them up in a stripe too) on the same channels... and by the laws of data not enjoying going up and down the same ide cable simultaneously (to put it simply) would it actually slow things down?

bah, i spent so much time mulling over that question i forgot the others :(

but how would i set it up?

(that was a very fast reply :D unless you added it as an afterthought to your previous post and didn't see mine :()

Striping alone doesn't halve the space....it combines all the drives to make what looks like one big drive. So you actualy total hard drive space would still be 240GB and then the data is spread amongst all of them...with four hard drives you'll get three times the performance of one.

yes, but what if (and this has never happened to me, but what if) one of them fails? does that then render the data on the other's useless? :(

and i'm also assuming i'd need to have 4 formatted drives... this is the current state of my system:

•11:20:06• <caLLous> Hard Disks: (Total/Free: 254.49/116.63GB Total/Free space on: C: 5.85GB/2.29GB D: 19.58GB/5.4GB E: 57.27GB/13.13GB F: 57.27GB/8.39GB G: 57.26GB/30.22GB H: 57.26GB/57.2GB) (it looks horrible outside irc :/)

:(
