Heavy snow will return occasionally, says Dr Viner, but when it does we will be unprepared. "We're really going to get caught out. Snow will probably cause chaos in 20 years time," he said.

I think that qualifies what he was saying, snowfall will be rare and when it comes it will be extreme. You could argue that is exactly what is happening at the moment, worst snowfall in the UK since 1987.

How is that a change tho - snowfall was always uncommon in the south and as for the chaos bit snow has always caused chaos here :)

We get snow pretty much every year here in Herts - not exactly a rare event :p

I can only speak from my own perspective. Up until 1992 or so we had snow every single year from my birth in 1975, proper snow and not just 1 days worth that melted away in a few hours. Since 1992 we have had two occasions where the snow has stayed for a few days, this year we have had snow on the ground since a week before Christmas. Last week it started to melt and was totally replaced overnight, we now have 9-12 inches on side streets where I live and it won't be leaving any time soon as the 5 day weather forecast indicates a likelyhood of more snow.

Basically I have seen a massive change in my lifetime in my local area, I don't know enough about other areas to pass comment but this years snowfall is very unusual based on snowfall patterns for the last 20 years.

I know what you mean Tom, it has been nice to watch the local kids having a blast and rolling around in it. Just wish they could get the roads clear so I can ear some beer vouchers. :)

Er, you mean "since 11 months ago", the last one of those "rare events".

No, worst snowfall since 1987 nationwide. One or two areas may have had more last Feb but 70% of the country has been hammered by snow this time. Last Feb was very much regional snowfall and not national.

Ah. So you're redefining your parameters from "UK" to "South" eh?

Bloody typical southerner :)
